WHAT TO KNOW
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to.

Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful.

In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character.

The application page from the former site can be found here.

MISC. RULES
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other.

Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request.

There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying.

If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite.

If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor.

Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans.

APPLICATION IN DETAIL
Your name:
Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference.
Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted.
Other characters played at Passing:

Character name:
Character fandom:
Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options.
Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from.
Importing development from old game? If yes, where from?
Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously.

In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves.

Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different.

Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon.

Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice.

Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section.

Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character.

Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed.

Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or [community profile] dear_mun are all fine.

Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread.

These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly.

Kieri Phelan || The Deed of Paksenarrion || v1.1?

[personal profile] redfoxoflyonya 2012-04-04 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Kieri Phelan shows up in the books as an adult. I'm taking him from about 40 years before that. There are canon things about what he was like as a child and what aspects he had hidden away that helped him become the man he did.

His elven cousins say that he, at this age, was full of fear with a core of bitter anger. It takes him many years to fully conquer the anger inside of him, but the fear he mostly overcomes quickly. Kieri can be easily frightened by an adult's anger, especially if it's directed at him. He's learned to expect to be beaten, or worse, and knows there's nothing he can do to stop it. Even with that, he's not a coward. He'll take beating after beating, yes, but only until he learns that he can hit back. Once he learns that, he'll fight until one of them is out cold.

The fear of what an adult will do to him is the only fear he has. Aside from that, he's fearless. Once he learns he can fight back, he'll do even that without any fear. He'll dare anything and do just about anything to prove himself and impress people. While he never starts up into mischief, he does become so certain of himself that he never thinks he'll lose a fight. He isn't quarrelsome and won't start a fight, but he will by gods finish it. He'll push boundaries and push boundaries until he's attacked, and then he'll fight back.

He has a deep thirst for knowledge and will learn anything that is presented to him. He doesn't rightly know how to read yet, but once he learns, he will be reading everything and anything he can get. As an adult, Kieri is fiercely determined. Once he wants something and has a goal, nothing stops him from gaining it.

He's exceptionally loyal and once someone had earned his loyalty, he will do anything for them, all they need do is ask. Even as an adult, he will spend a percentage of his earnings from a campaign to have magical cures available to his cohorts so that people who would die don't necessarily. He can't use them on everyone, but those he can, he does.

Even as an adult he still has that seed of anger, but from what the Halverics say of Kieri as a child, he never really gives into it. The most he really does is push people into attacking him and then beating them soundly (after he learns he can fight back, anyway). It does lead him to not think things through sometimes and take unnecessary risks.

Abilities: He can do all manner of manual labor that would exist in medieval times. Chop wood, clean, deal with kills (animal kinds). He can also track and is quite capable of surviving on his own in whatever conditions he needs to.

He has elven skills and powers (called taig-sense), but he has no knowledge of them and he has no idea how to access them. Since he doesn't know that he is half-elven, he wouldn't even know to try.

Kieri Phelan || The Deed of Paksenarrion || v1.1?

Writing sample:
He was running, turning left down one alleyway, right down another. His heart was pounding in his ears and his breaths were coming so shallowly in his lungs. He could hear his pursuer's footfalls behind him. They never fell farther behind and they always seemed to be catching up to him. Kieri couldn't be certain of who was behind him, but he still knew. It was Baron Sekkady. Or something of his.

He turned again and ran down another alleyway. This one would bring him somewhere safe! The Grange was just after this alleyway. He could make it! He could-

The end of the alleyway was walled off. It didn't even register in the dream that this wasn't right, just as the door suddenly appearing to his left didn't seem strange. It was a way out, a way to escape the Thing behind him.

He dove through the door and pulled it shut, leaning against it in the darkness. It wouldn't find him in here. It couldn't, even if that had been the only way out of the alley. But the smell of the room he'd gone into - blood and fear - broke into his thoughts.

"Artfiel," came a soft but cold whisper behind him.

Kieri turned, unable to stop himself, and looked at the speaker, and the room beyond him which was suddenly torch-lit. Sekkady. And the dungeon. Liart's altar. A place he had been far too often before escaping and a place he always feared being dragged back to.

"You shouldn't have run, Artfiel."

He shrank against the door and screamed. Maybe he could wake up. Maybe this really was just a dream.

Maybe...

Character name: Cosmos
Character fandom: Dissidia Final Fantasy & Dissidia Duodecim
Version: v1
Canon point: Just prior to being incinerated by Chaos
Importing development from old game? no
Background: My place is here. And here I shall remain.

Changes from canon, if AU: n/a

Personality: To understand Cosmos, one must understand what she is and what she was created for. Only then does the true depth of who she is manifests itself. She is a "perfect" manikin. Unlike the ones that plague World B, she is a fully realized as a clone of Cid of the Lufaine's wife (whose name is never provided). Upon her creation, she was implanted with the memories of Cid's wife and tasked with quelling the child-weapon Chaos so that he would obey the orders of the military which developed both of them. Circumstances led her to be sealed away in World B along with Cid and Chaos, and deified. Her task of calming the destructive forces of Chaos remains and keeping the world whole uses the majority of her divine powers and energy.

Hers is described as a "soothing presence" and it's no surprise given her role as the maintainer of harmony and calming the beast Chaos. Even those admit to questioning "what kind of person would drag people into a war?" find themselves drawn to her and opening up. She is the embodiment of peace and harmony, which is a sharp contrast to the role she plays in calling soldiers to fight on her behalf in a never ending cycle of war.

More than once, summoned warriors have called her cold or unfeeling, and while this is not true of her, she is remarkably calm and seemingly detached at all times. Part of this is the result of the considerable amount of energy she radiates to keep the world whole, part of it is from her only being a copy of a woman. Many of her memories are not her own, but those implanted within her by scientists, and she only carries that woman's memories and not her feelings. However, this does lead Cosmos to say that she treasures each and every memory, good and bad, which is created within the cycles- presumably because they are her own memories and not those of another.

To say she is unfeeling would be unfair. It grieves her immensely to watch her chosen warriors fight and fall and rise again only to face eventual slaughter. Over and over she witnessed their struggles, their hopes, their dreams, and then their demises. Yet she cares so deeply for them that she eventually sacrifices herself to free them from the cycle, expressing regret that she should have found this resolve sooner. She is not unaware of her role within the cycle, and while she takes steps to ensure a true end at the cost of her own existence, she admits that to be a Goddess of Harmony is to be an Angel of Death. The fate of her warriors is tied to her own and this burden weighs on her heavily. So much so that one asks if she'll finally crack a smile once the conflict is over. It's obvious to even the most clueless that she finds no levity or joy in her role within the cycle of war.

More than one person has expressed that she was cruel, knowing the truth about the cycles, yet not telling them. Rather, she allowed them to go on dreaming and hoping for home. This is not entirely incorrect. While not deliberately malicious, there is a touch of cruelty allowing people to foster hope and faith. Yet, these qualities are the very ones that eventually provide the warriors the necessary tools to free themselves from the eternal conflict, by giving them shards of her own power that would eventually be tempered by passion and devotion and coalesce into a crystal. Even so, Cosmos most often keeps her own counsel and does not reveal what she knows to be true. It is in its own way, her protecting her chosen, and at the same time ensuring that they do not quit the battle before it is ended. Despite her being tight-lipped with the ultimate truth, she oft plays the role of encouraging support, coming along the warriors with encouragement and direction should they stray from their path. She does not hesitate to tell one when they are in the wrong, especially when it puts others in the path of danger, but it is never viciously put or expressed in anger.

In summary, she is harmony, neutrality, balance in its purest form.
Abilities:
- First and foremost, Cosmos radiates serenity, quelling the destructive nature of Chaos. It is its own power, as it keeps the world whole and from crumbling to nothing.

- That power can be used to eradicate manikins or other foes, although to do so, she must divert her powers from keeping the world whole, thereby jeopardizing the fabric of reality.

- She can sense the spirits of her chosen warriors at all times, although it is a back of the mind sensation for her, unless one of them is snuffed or gravely harmed.

- She can hear the remote prayers of others, even those who are not her chosen.

- She has the power to summon warriors from their own worlds into World B to fight for her cause. Presumably, she is aware of them and their suitability to her cause even from a different world.

- Some of her powers of sustaining the world can be diverted into a healing/rest for the weary.

- She can bestow a portion of her power into any of her chosen warriors, although it greatly weakens her to do so.

- She is capable of teleporting to anyone, anywhere, though most often she summons warriors to herself, rather than going to them.

Writing sample:
One would never guess that this was the calm before the storm.

This Sanctuary, this bastion of peace and serenity, was poised to become the stage for a final battle. Yet somehow, for the moment, it appeared no different than it had always been. This was seat of Cosmos’ power, where she reigned enthroned as a Goddess of Harmony. Unlike the world without, there was no sign of decay or death. For even for life to be sustained there is an element of death as blades of grass fade and give way to fresh growth. Natural, yet unsuitable so very close to the deity who maintained the world itself.

The clear waters of the Sanctuary floor shimmered undisturbed, while streams of light arced through the air, nearly touching the drifting clouds, through which sunlight broke through. Standing at the ready was her Warrior, the last line of defense, her protector so like her in his creation. Cosmos lifted her eyes to look at him and took note of the resolve etched on his face. He would stand and stand alone and for yet another cycle, he would fall. This was his plan. His and Kain’s: to save a force for the next cycle and thus win the warriors of harmony the chance to end the conflict. They would give themselves for her cause and she… she would be forced to sit and watch, to endure more losses.

It occurred to her then that she should have done more to put an end to this ongoing conflict, that she should have enacted her own plans sooner, taken a more active role in stopping this nightmare. This battle, these losses, they were not what she wished for any of them. The grief and disappointment in herself was nearly crippling. And yet, she had tried to take a new path, seek out a new resolution. Had the manikins not been unleashed on this world, perhaps the seeds of hope-fragments of her own power- she had planted within her warriors would have come to fruition. But this round had been yielded already.

The end had come and Cosmos recognized it. There was the familiar shock as one by one her chosen fell before their opponents, on the far side of the world. One by one they were being snuffed out, to be forever removed, just as her Warrior would be soon. Soon… unless she chose another way, a less passive way.

“They have come.”

At the sound of his voice, Cosmos looked up. Indeed, there was a force enough to exterminate the world one hundred times over, spread out across the Sanctuary in an unmoving, unemotional line. These manikins had no purpose nor will, save to kill or be killed.

She was not like these. Nor was he. But could will alone be enough to stop the slaughter that was to come?

Voice sample:
Every memory born of this world is, without exception, a priceless treasure to me.
Yes. I sense it. I feel my energy burning brightly within them, as well as its purpose.
I wish I could have such a dream.

Canon point: During the beginning of Dirge of Cerberus
Importing development from old game?N/A
Background: Story of the Planet's Greatest Pilot.

Changes from canon, if AU: N/A

Personality:
Gruff and curmudgeonly, Cid Highwind seems years older than his actual age of thirty five. His attitude falls in the range of 'rude and crude', and Cid has no filter, as he's well known for his foul mouth and cursing streaks.

Despite this outside appearance, Cid isn't a cruel man. He does have quite a bit of anger, most of which is directed to several different sources, but the fact remains the same - losing out on his dream of being the first human in space changed who he was.

One who has not handled the disappointment of the failed launch in a healthy way, Cid does tend to take out his anger on Shera. However, though the launch failure was technically her fault, it was still Cid's choice to stop it in time to keep from killing her. It was a split second decision made in the heat of the moment, which shows just where his priorities truly lie. However, his bitterness is still very much a part of him, though it has seemed to ease in the time between meeting up with AVALANCHE and the end of Advent Children.

Cid is prone to using insults, but it's more of a spontaneous verbal vomit than a planned hateful statement. Curses do pepper his typical conversation without a second thought, and though he doesn't mean to offend it ends up happening sometimes. He'll quickly shrug it off and move on to the next topic - Cid isn't known for his sensitivity. He's always been a little unpolished in his interactions with people, but he's straight forward and blunt. Two admirable qualities rarely found in a world run by a corrupt government.

Above all else, when it comes to mechanics and working with his hands, Cid is very intelligent. He's also determined (crossing over the line to 'stubborn'), and once he's developed a grudge it's a long time before he's able to get past it. (Unless you're part of Shinra - he'll probably never get over that grudge).

Cid Highwind also has the makings of a good leader. His no nonsense approach to problems is extremely useful (especially in a world where nonsense is pretty much the norm). He isn't one to try to take over any leadership position if someone's already there - he's more than happy to chill in his corner unless he's needed. Cid will step up when the occasion calls for it, and when he does he gets stuff done. He thinks quick on his feet, and is directing a fleet of airships by the time DoC rolls around.

Deep down, he is a kind hearted person. It's hard to see, with the anger and the glaring and the grudges that last for years, but it's there. He doesn't like what's happening to the Planet, even if it's something he never really thought about much before he hooked up with AVALANCHE. He decides to help them, without reward or promise of anything in return. He starts to view the Planet as a 'sick kid', and grows determined to help AVALANCHE stop Sephiroth.

With a short fuse, a (secretly hidden) big heart, and a good head on his shoulders, Cid Highwind isn't exactly the most complicated of people. He is a good friend to have, especially in a pinch, and will go to any length to give someone a hand.

PS: Cid ♥'s tea.

Abilities:

-->Cid fights with spears and lances - at this point, he's usually equipped with his ultimate weapon Venus Gospel, which amplifies his attacks based on how much MP he has at the time. He's also able to wield guns, but seems to prefer his lances/spears.

-->Most of his bigger attacks (Limit Breaks) tend to hit multiple enemies at once.

-->His strength is average for a man of his height and build. Working with engines and his hands means his arm strength might be pretty good, but his stamina is crap on account of his cigarette habit. So, he won't be running marathons anytime soon, but he can hold his own in a fair fight.

Writing sample:

It's with irritation that he practically shoves the stick into the fire, the poor twig bending with the force he puts behind the motion. All he wanted was some peace and quiet. Preferably in his workshop. Alone.

In a more reasonable state of mind, Cid is aware that it was completely his choice to hop on AVALANCHE's (seemingly self destructive) train. In this mood, though, it's hard to remember that teeny little detail. What used to be a perfectly legitimate excuse to join up with this particular band of misfits has warped in his mind. Now he's the victim, lead forcefully into whatever arbitrary mission these kids decided on.

Cid steals a quick glance around their camp, mentally correcting himself. Not everyone there is a kid - Barret and Vincent definitely weren't, even if they look just as out of place as he felt sometimes. What the hell was he thinking, running off like that? He had a lot of shit on his plate, and the future of the group isn't looking too bright in his eyes.

"Hey, old man." It's Yuffie who interrupts his angry musing, plopping herself down beside him on the convenient log he'd claimed as his own. Not that something like ownership meant diddly to Yuffie. Cid grunts at her in greeting, and she holds something out to him.

Leery, he leans over to get a better look at what she's offering him. It seems to be two harmless strips of beef, dried and ready to eat. He knows better than to take her at face value, though, and he leans back, giving Yuffie a wary look.

"What do you want, kid?"

"Nothing! Jeez, every one's so suspicious."

"Uh huh. Probably 'cause you give nothin' up for free."

"Call it a mood," she shrugs, gesturing at him with the beef a little violently. He takes it, less hesitant when he sees Barret with his own handful of the beef.

"Maybe you're just sick," is his way of thanking her.

"Maybe I got tired of looking at your angry, dopey face," is her way of saying 'you're welcome'.

Smirking, Cid takes a bite out of the meat, feeling marginally better than a few minutes before.

Character fandom: Magic Kaito | Detective Conan
Version: [v1]
Canon point: After 'Episode 0' of MK and Chapter 812 of DC.
Importing development from old game? n/a
Background:

The Magician
The Thief
The Series

Changes from canon, if AU: n/a

Personality:

Kaito is a magician. He is, first and foremost, a show man. He's been learning and practicing the art of stage magic since he was very little as his father was a world renown magician and, in Kaito's book, the best in the world. Sadly, Kaito loses his father at an early age due to a stage 'accident.' Despite this, however, Kaito continued on learning all the elements his father taught him including the art of disguise, basics of card tricks, preparation for an impromptu trick and perhaps the most important part of being a magician- Poker face. It is by far the part Kaito struggles with the most.

It is a common misconception that Kaito has mastered every element his father had taught him and 'poker face' or hiding your true emotions and feelings the one skill most people seem to think he's best at. This is not true. Kaito is good at hiding his true feelings, yes. He is by no means perfect. He slips up on occasion and can be a complete spazz when things don't go according to his plan. Over time he's gotten better and better but he still has a long way to go.

Kaito loves magic. He loves performing and he loves the look of wonder and awe on his audience's face. Because of his desire to perform and force reactions from others it's pretty obvious he's a show off. He would be constantly in trouble in school as he loves to play pranks on other students and is a general disruption to the class-but it seems as though his teacher has given up on punishing him as all she does is sigh and face-palm at his antics when she can't catch him on not paying attention to the lesson.

One of the most common things he does to disrupt his class is flip the girl that sits next to him, and his childhood friend's skirt. He's a bit of a pervert and has been caught peeping in on girls and freely admitted to picking the lock on the girl's locker room--stating that they shouldn't have used such a flimsy lock to keep him out.

Kaito's biggest weakness is without a doubt his EXTREME case of ichthyophobia. It is so bad that he cannot even stand the shape or design of a fish. He will not eat it, he will not touch it and he will not go near it if he can help it. However, if someone's life is in danger-particularly that childhood friend he's in love with, he will ignore the fear to the best of his ability so that he can play hero. He very likely owes his composure to poker face.

As the magician he is possibly one of the most childish people you could ever meet and his best friend and love interest only accents this part of his personality as the two are constantly bickering and calling each other stupid. Don't let the outer appearance fool you, they are extremely close and she is the most important person in Kaito's life. He is highly protective of her and would do anything for her. Of course, if anyone were to point this out, he'd deny it and probably make some kind of comment about Aoko's figure-or lack thereof.

Because of his tendency to show off and childishness he's a very social guy and can blend and mix with society much better than the other geniuses in the series. He can easily make friends and tone down his intelligence so that he can have a decent conversation with others and avoid making them feel stupid and driving them away. Teenagers in high school don't generally handle genius, quiet types, after all.

Kaito can generally get along with just about anyone but there is one person he openly does not like. Despite it being a very popular pairing amongst the fandom, Kaito cannot stand the detective Hakuba Saguru for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps the biggest being that Hakuba seems to have a romantic interest in Kaito's childhood friend. Another contributing factor would most likely be that Hakuba likes to not-so-subtly imply that Kaito is the infamous thief known to the public as Kaitou 1412 or more commonly- The Kaitou Kid.

Kaito is the infamous thief known to the public as Kaitou Kid. However, most people would never make the connection as the Kid is enigmatic and calm and collected like any famous thief that turns heists into free entertainment should be. He has a smirk that can un-nerve hundreds of police officers and Kaito, while he is the biggest trouble maker in school is no where near calm and collected like his alter ego. Kid is a daring and elusive criminal master mind that always announces what he intends to steal and when he intends to steal it-sometimes, when he feels like it, he'll write a cryptic message in his heist notice and secretly laugh when the police have trouble figuring it out. And he always returns what he steals.

Kid employs the use of stage magic in all his heists to keep his adoring fans guessing. Yes, he has fans. Hundreds-possibly thousands of them. No performer, after all, would be complete without his audience. And, he is very protective of his fans. However, he is also protective of the task force designed to catch him and the detectives that are generally annoyed by him. Even though he's a world famous thief he still has morals and does his absolute best to ensure no one gets hurt at a heist. When this does happen, however, he feels personally responsible for not finding a way to prevent it. He has a habit of helping the police catch much worse criminals than himself and seems to offer a hand when ever he can as both thief and teenage boy.

The reason why this teenage boy became a jewel thief is because at some point while he was sixteen or freshly seventeen he came across his Dad's biggest secret- that secret being that Daddy-dearest was secretly the original Kaitou Kid and had left a tape to play for Kaito when one day he inevitably ran across the room hidden behind a portrait. Unfortunately, the tape was old and had rotted so the explanation for why his father was a thief was lost on the poor boy. Shortly after he met up with his dad's old friend who revealed to him that his dad had not died in an accident but instead had been murdered. Anger over his father's death restored, Kaito vows to find the ones responsible and learn why his dad had to die-something he did accomplish, only to get thrown into a deeper mystery as the murderers were looking for a gem stone- a magic gemstone that glows red under the moonlight and cries tears when a certain comment passes to make the drinker immortal.

Kaito only wants to find the gem before the bad guys and destroy it once and for all to avenge his father, the late magician.

Abilities:

Honestly there really isn't a whole lot he can't do. He is on an expert level with his stage magic. In fact, he is so good at deceiving the eyes that anyone who didn't know any better might mistake his practiced hand for real magic. To help him with his theatrics he can mimic any voice he hears and disguise as anyone of his choosing flawlessly. As the thief Kaitou Kid, he is known as a master of disguise. It is not impossible to figure out who he's disguised as but Kaito is very observant and does not usually make mistakes when it comes to disguises- he's even started using plastic resin for his masks because it feels more like real skin than normal latex.

He is a perfectionist. He calculates everything and makes sure to always have several back up plans incase something goes wrong. He very likely contemplates his heists and then goes over every little detail that could possibly be his downfall and stays several steps ahead of everyone. Preparation is one of the most important part of being a magician and Kaito ensures beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is prepared for everything.

Obviously, Kaito is intelligent. As it stands, only one person has ever gotten the better of Kaito and that one person is the shrunken detective whose series he frequently guest stars on. However, anytime Conan manages to outsmart the thief, he is prepared for it and manages another means of a escape. He is a thief, after all, and very good at thinking on his feet to avoid capture.

Kaito also seems to have mastered the art of luck so that it really does seem more like a skill. And, while luck is most definitely on his side he actually does not rely on it as much as most the fandom seems to think. Yes, it was luck, and only luck alone that Kaito avoided a fatal shot to the heart by placing the jewel he'd stolen in his left breast pocket. However, as I have stated before, he is a perfectionist and generally prepared for anything.

Along with these things he has an unmistakable knack for art and forgeries, lock picking, along with killer acrobatic skills that he has most definitely inherited from his mother, and impeccable hearing. All things that contribute to making him into the beloved and elusive thief Kaitou Kid.

Writing sample:

Kaito leaned up against the doorframe as he peaked over to get a good look at what was going on in the next room. He shifted his grip on the unconscious girl in his arms and pondered all possible escape routes. He could get himself out of this easy. The problem was that he didn't want to leave the girl currently snoozing away anywhere they could possibly get her. He absolutely had to get her out first.

He took a calming breath to reassess the situation and glanced around the hall. There was a small window just across from him that he could maybe squeeze through but he wasn't sure that he could get them both out, and he wasn't about to shove her out a three story window. He glanced to the other side of the hall, the stair case in view. His best bet was to sneak down the remaining flights of stairs and carry her out the front door. Stupid girl, getting involved like this. He swallowed hard as he heard footsteps coming closer to his doorframe and held his breath up until the moment the person turned and walked the other way. He glanced into the room again, cursing the number of blind spots as he tried to see if everyone one was distracted enough he could slip right by the door.

The thief shifted again to gently set the girl down on her feet, keeping her in his arms so she wouldn't fall and gripped his card gun before firing at the fire alarm. It immediately came to life and started blaring emergencies. Kaito picked the girl up once more and pressed himself up against the wall as much as possible. He wasn't in kid guise but he knew better than to try hiding in plain sight with these guys. the men piled out of the room and luckily didn't spare him a glance as they went to check on the alarm and security cameras. That meant he had roughly five minutes to get himself and the sleeping girl out of the museum and to safety. He could do it. He hoped.

Character name: Conan Edogawa (Shinichi Kudo)
Character fandom: Detective Conan
Version: v1
Canon point: after chapter 812
Importing development from old game? No.
Background:
Conan
Shinichi

Changes from canon, if AU: None

Personality:

The first thing anyone notices about Conan is his intelligence. He knows and understands far too much, even for his true age. Ask him about practically any topic and he can ramble about it knowledgeably. As the seven -year-old he appears to be he attempts to conceal the full extent of his knowledge and deduction skill, but he has never been very successful at this. He tries to appear like an ordinary child, but he doesn't really have clue what normal is.

He is brilliantly intelligent, cool-headed, independent, logical, and acerbic. And hopelessly in love with his childhood friend Ran. His ability for deductive logic, immense knowledge, and analytical ability make him an amazing detective. He is hardly ever wrong, once he has figured a case out. Even cases that have been labeled unsolvable.

But at the same times, his genius has created problems for him. He is completely unable to resist a mystery. If he finds one, his curiosity will not let him rest until he finds an answer. When in the middle of an investigation he often forgets the danger of hunting suspects in a child's body. He can deduct motives and solve impossibly complicated riddles, but he doesn't really understand people on a personal level. He didn't understand his own feelings for Ran until it was too late to tell her anything, and he has repeatedly missed obvious hints from others about their feelings for him. He can also be very forgetful about his personal life. He never remembers his own birthday, for example. He also has trouble relating to his peers. Even before his shrinking, he was almost completely isolated from his classmates, apart from Ran. He is most comfortable when dealing with adults at a professional level.

Whatever name you call him by, he has always had a habit of putting on different personalities to get the results he wants. Shinichi's core personality is a bored and irritable boy. He finds most of the typical occupations of his peers uninteresting and constantly runs a sarcastic commentary on the people around him. Only a few things can snap him out of this. Any mention of Sherlock Holmes will instantly turn him into an enthusiastic boy who can ramble on for hours. And the appearance of a mystery of any kind will instantly bring out his razor sharp focus. Once he is on the hunt to solve a mystery he is almost impossible to distract. He is a huge fan of soccer, and admits to a fondness for cheesecake. And there is Ran, of course. His most important person.

Even when he was still Shinichi, he admitted to deliberately putting on a mature and serious attitude so that the police would listen to him. As Conan now he often puts on an act of sugary enthusiasm for the benefit of adults. Especially when at a murder scene and drawing attention to vital clues. He is probably truest to his own personality among his classmates in first grade and among th few people who know his secret. But even with them he is secretive.

Currently Conan has only two goals in his life. First, to reclaim his old life and to finally confess his feelings to Ran. To do this he needs to find an antidote for the poison that turned him into a child and he needs to bring an end to the Black Organization. Secondly, he has the goal of finding the truth behind every crime he stumbles across.

He believes in justice. If finding the truth involves bending or breaking the law, he will do that without a seconds regret. He also believes that there is nothing that justifies the taking of a life, even if it is a murderer's life. Once he told a fellow high school detective that cornering someone with logic and allowing them to commit suicide was the same as committing murder themselves.

He has the worst luck in the world when it comes to stumbling across cases. He can't go anywhere without dead bodies turning up somewhere. Amusement parks, the mall, bus-rides, the beach, parties, restaurants, even if he is just walking down the street. If there is a crime happening anywhere in the area, he will be there. If there is a way for a person to die, he has probably seen it before. And no matter how horrific the scene, he is never phased. He sees bodies as evidence. Nothing more.

His forced second childhood has turned him into a kind of deadpan snarker. He is never shy about making acerbic observations about the people around him, though most of those comments never leave his head. Particularly if they're getting off track in a murder investigation. Additionally, his act as a child has made him more than a little manipulative. He is entirely capable of leading adults through an entire investigation without ever letting them know what was really happening. If they still don't get it, he will resort to drugging them and using them as living puppets.

He idolizes Sherlock Holmes, and has deliberately modeled himself after the detective. And he is a natural skeptic when it comes to ghosts, monsters, and magic. He has repeatedly run into murderers attempting to disguise their crimes as the works of ghosts or local monster stories. Upon meeting any people with such special powers here, he is likely to immediately assume it is a hoax to cover up for another crime.

Shinichi has a habit of taking everything on himself. He tends to be very closemouthed about the things that are really bothering him and will never ask for help even if he needs it. He often forgets just how physically vulnerable he is right now, especially when he gets caught up in the chase. He is terrified of the Black Organization ever discovering that Shinichi Kudo is still alive. But he is most terrified that Ran will get hurt. If it means that she won't get involved he is willing to lie directly to his best friend. Even if it means she will hate him if she ever finds out.

He hates lying, and he hates being in this situation where his whole lie is a lie. But even more, he hates what he has done to Ran. He has to sit and watch Ran getting upset and worried about Shinichi's disappearance, when all he has to offer her is an occasional phonecall through a voice changer.

Abilities:

He's a detective. One of, if not the, best in his canon. Basically this means that he has incredible skills of observation, is good at reading criminal's intentions and is capable of putting together pieces of seemingly unrelated information to figure out the method and reasoning behind elaborate crimes. Conan has vast amounts of information memorized on hundreds of different topics. Most of them relating to solving murders. He has also shown other skills such as piloting aircraft, advanced marksmanship, knowledge of poisons and the human body and solving riddles and codes.

Conan always carries a number of disguised tools and gadgets, which he uses to make up for the weakness of his child's body. His most offensive weapons are his wristwatch and his shoes. His shoes are specially designed to temporarily increase his kicking power. Using them, he can knock criminals unconscious from hundreds of feet away. And has occasionally dented metal using a soccer ball. His wristwatch has a concealed sedative dart launcher.

His glasses have secondary uses as night vision goggles and as a homing device tracker. Conan's bowtie is a voice changer, and his belt buckle conceals an soccerball inflater and launcher.

The only really unusual ability he has isn't so much an ability as it is a condition. A year ago he was poisoned by an experimental drug called APTX4869. It was supposed to kill him, but instead he shrank to the size of a first grader. As of now, there is no permanent cure although he has used some temporary cures to return to his true age for a few hours.

Writing sample:

If there was one thing his unwilling trip back to first grade had taught Conan, it was how to survive boredom. It had been hard enough making it through the tedium of school the first time, when he had truly been a child. Now?

He was seventeen years old, and learning about the exciting worlds of long division and finger-painting. Boredom was an understatement. His only entertainment at this point was calculating how many questions he still needed to miss to keep his grades from being suspiciously high.

He scowls down at the art project of the day and almost imagines he can feel his brain starting to atrophy from disuse. Silently he wishes for a mystery to turn up. Any kind of mystery. As long as it wasn't another murder. He'd even accept a notice from that useless thief. At least some of those riddles had stumped him for a brief moment.

"My, my," Haibara comments from her seat next to him. "Is the great detective having problems? No new puzzle taking up space in that brain of yours?"

Conan favors the other shrunken adult with an unimpressed scowl.

"Idiot," he drawls in a bored fashion. "You're just the same as me. I suppose I'll just have to find something to investigate." About to continue, he is interrupted by one of the real seven-year-olds in the class.

"Conan," Mitsuhiko growls, "You were thinking of going off by yourself again. You're always doing that!"

"Yeah," Ayumi chimes in. "We're the detective boys! Its no fair if you find a mystery by yourself!"

Conan freezes and laughs nervously at the three children glaring at him. "Ahaha, of course I wasn't planning on going off by myself."

And of course that doesn't work as the three children keep glaring at him suspiciously. And he is certain Haibara is laughing at him. He could definitely see her twisted sense of humor in this.

"Good!" Ayumi claims. "Because Mitsuhiko found another haunted house! And we're going to investigate it after school. You'll come too, won't you Conan?"

Looking between the subtly amused Haibara and the two boys who seemed determined to drag him to the haunted house if he dared to say no to Ayumi, Conan wonders when this had become his life.

Voice sample:

In which Conan briefly turns back to his true age and does some damage control.

In which Conan finds trouble. Again. The best friend isn't amused.

In which Conan indulges his manipulative side

Character name: Saguru Hakuba
Character fandom: Detective Conan | Magic Kaito
Version: [v2]
Canon point: Following 'Episode 0' of Magic Kaito and chapter 733 of Detective Conan
Importing development from old game? Nope.
Background: The White Knight

Changes from canon, if AU: Well first and foremost, the name isn't Saguru Hakuba anymore, it's Alice Hakuba. Alice is, obviously, a girl. That's the biggest difference between this version and canon. Alice's mother's side of the family came from money and Alice's mom was the sort of socialite mother who's so busy throwing parties that half the time she forgets she has a kid. As a result, Alice was primarily raised by her grandam, who taught her all about how to be a lady. Well, that and a few other helpful little things...

When her grandam died she moved to Japan with her dad and soon befriended Aoko Nakamori. Though her father wouldn't permit her to observe the police force under his jurisdiction, Aoko learned of Alice's interest and spoke to her father and convinced him to let Alice be present at Kid heists, which were generally acknowledged as totally nonviolent anyway.

While this Kid certainly didn't enjoy being chased by a stubborn detective anymore than the canon one, he was still a teenage boy and took to teasing Alice on heists, often returning the stolen items by placing them on her person, particularly if they were some sort of jewelry. When Alice received the piece of Kid's DNA after one heist and managed to track the results down to Kaito from her class, rather than confront Kaito about it she kept the information to herself, though this did prompt her to spend more time with Kaito as a way of observing and keeping an eye on him.

Like Saguru, she's been traveling off and on in between Europe and Japan for various reasons, but unlike her male counterpart, she's kept herself solidly involved in each heist, if only for the reason that with her around the task force always knew where to find the stolen item after Kid was done with it.

Due to her close relationship with Aoko, however, and Aoko's own with Kaito, as well as Alice's suspicions that Kaito is Kid, Alice is no longer actively trying to catch Kid. She's a little bit more concerned with the figures in black lurking on distant rooftops with sniper rifles during Kid heists now. And, perhaps, "accidentally" tripping up Conan whenever they happen to coincide on Kid heists.

Personality: At first glance Alice is a very neat and meticulous individual. Her dress is immaculate, her words and actions precise, and she values punctuality to an almost unholy degree. She finds emotions and human interaction messy and unreliable (though she is well versed in ettiquette and can quite easily maintain a polite conversation), perhaps due to her early introduction to the darker side of the human experience (she has, in time, been exposed to so many murders that her pet hawk Watson will recognize and immediately be drawn to the scent of human blood). As a result, she finds people and their motivations difficult to understand.

When she is first introduced in Magic Kaito she has a habit of asking the criminals he catches "Why do you do it?" Where other detectives in the series will use motive as a piece of the puzzle to solving a crime, Alice is forced to rely on other methods to find the answer. For this reason, Alice will rarely rely on instinct, more content to think things through fully before she acts.

Luckily for Alice, she tends to think very quick on her feet. And she learns quickly. While she still might not quite understand why Aoko wanted to be her friend, she appreciates the friendship nonetheless and has grown to trust Aoko unendingly.

Alice is practical, not taken to whimsy and though she was raised to be a lady, with all of the airs and graces, she was also raised to know practical things. Whatever task Alice sets herself to, she finishes, and finishes well, right, and proper. She's determined and stubborn, but in a quiet, steady way that doesn't force her will onto others, rather, simply refuses to let others force their will upon her.

She is a highly intelligent girl, and has a deeply analytical mind. As a talented detective, Alice observes all the finite details of a case and manages to piece them together into a solution. Her eyes rarely miss a thing even if, as is often the case in regards to the human element, she doesn't quite understand what the detail might mean.

However, all of this means that she can be rather fussy and worry too much over the details, if she lets herself. Alice has a bad tendency to obsess and an inclination towards perfectionism that means she is constantly overly critical and judgemental of herself. She always thinks that she can do better. When she surrounds herself with positive, supportive individuals like Aoko, however, she does much better. Due to her extensive studies in the realms of psychology and the like, Alice is all to aware of the weak points and usually she can spot and try and temper them herself. She's getting better at it every single day.

Generally, however, Alice is a happy girl. She's doing what she loves, has a good, true friend, and, well, let's just be honest, those Kid heists are a lot of fun, aren't they?

Abilities: Alice has no real abilities or powers beyond, perhaps, a strange ability to keep perfect time. She is highly intelligent, and a talented detective, but she can also go a bit tunnel vision in that regard if she's not careful. She's had some formal training in criminal psychology and is a decent actress, as evidenced by the Sunset Manor case in Detective Conan when she faked her own death. She typically carries a gun and handcuffs on her person as well, and knows how to use both of them.

Her grandam made sure she was properly schooled in how to be a lady, but she also made sure that Alice knew anatomy, self defense, billiards, and how to cheat at poker. She learned embroidery when she was younger, as well as horseback riding and formal dance. While she is a horrible cook, her baking is excellent. She can hold her drink quite well.

Writing sample:The necklace that Kid had been after that night was so thin and delicate, it's chain so fine, that Alice almost walked away from the scene of the heist when it was all over before she registered the feeling of cool metal against the sensitive skin of her neck. She cursed quietly under her breath and spun on her heel to march back up to Nakamori-keibu, unbuttoning the high collar of her blouse as she did.

The strained look of horror on Nakamori-keibu's face - eyes affixed on her hand at her throat like one might eye a cobra - might have been humorous under other circumstances, but Alice was already late meeting up with Aoko tonight and she had no idea how Kid managed to fasten the necklace under her clothes without her noticing. As it was, she simply opened just enough buttons to get her fingers on the clasp to unhook the necklace and hand it to the inspector. "Care of Kaitou Kid." She said, smiling apologetically, before wheeling back around and exiting the scene with as much grace as she could manage, with her collar unbuttoned at the throat and causing her to appear like some sort of ravished victorian lady.

She really wished Kid would stop making fun of her like that.

"What happened?" Aoko said when she saw whatever expression must have been on Alice's face, standing on the doorstep outside the Nakamori house. Kaito's house sat dark and silent next to it, but Alice wouldn't be surprised if Kaito wasn't watching them both through the blinds, just the same. Alice let out a soft sigh and leaned her head against Aoko's shoulder. Aoko's hand rose to rest on her hair. She began petting Alice's hair and, after a moment, made a soft, bemused sound in her throat, fingers curling. "Did Kid give you another courting gift?" She asked, laughing faintly.

Alice's shoulders stiffened.

Aoko's laughter quickly spiraled into something laugh and uncontrolled, until she was leaning on Alice far more than Alice was leaning on her. Eventually her laughter dwindled away, shoulders still shaking intermittedly with tremors of humor.

Alice sighed again and began to carefully try and maneuver the two of them into the house, while Aoko still clung to her for support. It couldn't hurt, she supposed, to try and look on the bright side:

At least this way that weird brat with the flat paned glasses and the creepy stare wouldn't be getting as many commendations in the paper anymore.

Character name: Reeve Tuesti
Character fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Version: v1
Canon point: Reeve will enter the game immediately following his having engineered the successful theft of the Keystone to the Temple of the Ancients and his betrayal of Cloud and his party by handing the Keystone over to the Turks. In spite of this, he has succeded upon remaining with the party, holding the safety of Barret's adopted child over their heads as leverage. Not a proud day.

Importing development from old game? n/a

Background: Reeve Tuesti

Changes from canon, if AU: n/a

Personality: Reeve Tuesti has a secret life.  He's been a good son, a good employee, and a good person.  He's always believed hard work is rewarded and that his work is rewarding.  Reeve Tuesti is affable and accommodating. Reeve Tuesti attempts to use his gifts to benefit the people of his city and his world.  Reeve Tuesti is an employee of a corrupt and crumbling world government.  He is a humanitarian in an inhuman place. The doubts and fears Reeve had been able to excuse or ignore during his early tenure under the ShinRa have surfaced at last, too large to be contained any longer. Reeve Tuesti is too smart for his own good.

A prodigy who designed the Mako reactor in his early twenties, Reeve was certainly a good student.  He's an equally good son.  He's especially close with his mother, Ruvie, and admires her patience and forbearance.  Reeve wants what's best for his mother.  Since the death of his father, Reeve has been urging his mother to actualize, to do some sort of outreach so that she feels more a part of the world and can share her gifts with others.  Active, courageous kindness is a quality Reeve thinks is possibly more important than any other.  He believes that everyone can do some good, no matter how small, and that all life has value.  Reeve is a practical person who believes in what he can prove to be true, but he's far from devoid of wonder or whimsy.  In his architecture, he expresses his idealism and optimism as well as his mastery of structural engineering.  In his exploration of the limits of robotics, he expresses his creativity and humor as well as his love of pure science and discovery.

Being the sort to spend long hours at the office, then take work home as well, Reeve's social life is variable. It's not that he never dates, but being set up by his few friends and the well meaning ladies of the ShinRa secretarial pool is a hit and mostly miss proposition, since most women (or men, for that matter) don't seem all that keen on his interests. Reeve's had a few dates that turned into something that was briefly more, but at heart he's not sure what he's hoping for. He's open-minded about sexual matters but is fairly sure it isn't still appropriate for him to get crushes.  Which he sometimes still does. Though at the moment, he's a just a bit over-scheduled and those little things that add spice to life have been put on the back burner. In fact, the way things stand at the moment, the Head of Urban Development's most constant close companion is a robotic cat.

Re: Reeve Tuesti : FF VII : v1

[personal profile] toweroflearning 2012-04-09 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Reeve is stubborn. Though his ethics do allow for wiggle room, when he's reached the limit of their give he can be uncompromising. Having an unpopular opinion is no obstacle. When he comes to believe through data and accident reports that the popular space program is a waste of money (and potentially of lives), he recommends it be shut down. Though he can be diplomatic and conciliatory, he's always followed his own moral compass and acted accordingly. If only that were as simple to do as it seemed before-- well, everything. Current events are conspiring to test Reeve's ethical boundaries. Reeve has come to see his company (and government) as corrupt and unstable, horrors he is only beginning to comprehend are being dragged into the light. But the terrorists that style themselves as a force for positive change have only increased the body count, and among the innocent citizens of Midgar, as well. Shades of grey have become a fog.
Reeve is naturally earnest and enthusiastic, and would prefer to be open with those around him, but his work environment makes that both unwise and awkward. He deals with most of this sort of pressure with low-key, sarcastic humor, though most of the jokes he makes either go over the heads of those present or come off as self-effacing. As tensions increase both inside the company and in the wider world, Reeve's veneer is becoming increasingly hard to maintain, though it's essential that it remain intact for the time being. So Reeve raises his objections, draws out his dreams, and plays the waiting game.

Reeve is quite empathetic and understands more of the motivations of the people around him than they would probably like him to. Of course, he doesn't let on, since saying he isn't above politics would be a gross understatement. He's simply very careful. Reeve does do his best to use his understanding to push his agenda of improvements and advancements forward within an organization that is revealing itself to care less and less about either. He's loyal to Shinra, to his (new) President and his company still, but certain incidents have shaken the foundations of Reeve's commitment. Beginning with the mass desertion of SOLDIER, the disappearance of General Sephiroth and culminating most recently in the abandonment of Sector 7 and the General's mysterious and bloody return, Reeve's conviction that all is far from right at Shinra Inc. has been growing. His comfort and certainty have been undermined by degrees he can hardly bear to acknowledge. This mindset would probably be viewed as a drawback by the Turks, for whom he is spying at the moment, immersed in what remains of AVALANCHE (as Cait Sith). Reeve has allied with the Turks in the past, but this time, what they don't know just might hurt them.

Reeve is at a crossroads in his life, one that will force into the light many things he once felt could be ignored, and cast a shadow on many things he once thought were quite clearly defined. The ability to compartmentalize that has benefited him has become a luxury he can no longer afford. Reeve has set himself on a path strewn with moral choices, all of which combine to tip the balance in the struggle for the fate of his planet. All of his life, without knowing it, he has been preparing for this moment.

Abilities: For all that he possesses natural gifts and skills that make him quite unusual, Reeve considers himself a pretty solid example of a normal human being.  Reeve has received the self-defense training mandated for all Shinra executives, but carries no weapon or Materia.  He prefers it that way.

(source: an event post made in Queen of Hearts, where Reeve currently plays as a woman-- the scene references the granting of a wish and a vision)

[There isn't any taking it back, though Reeve wishes there was. She ought to know better than to take anything for granted in this place. It's too easy, getting used to one's cage, letting one's guard down. Everything is too easy, right up until it becomes unbearable.

Wishes aren't something Reeve indulges in very often. Goals, aspirations-- those are different, less fantastical animals. But she had wanted to know, about her city, her mother, her world, and so she did wish. Because in her heart, she was hopeful-- even though her mind was uneasy.

Anyway, she had never really fancied herself the sort to have a tattoo. So she had wished.
I need to know, what's happening in my city, Midgar-- are things under control? Is everyone all right? Has any time passed since I left?

Her answer had been something like a vision before waking, half-recalled-- or a poorly edited film, looping back on itself. Afterwards, there had been a kind of bleak incomprehension.
What could they mean, these voices, faces, images from another world?]

...

...(a recorded voice, the President) "...today the No.1 Reactor was bombed. The terrorist group AVALANCHE has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
It is expected that AVALANCHE will continue its reign of terror. But citizens of Midgar.... there is no need to fear. I have immediately mobilized SOLDIER to protect our citizenry against this senseless violence. Thank you and good night."

...(a board meeting, herself standing, giving a report-- she looks tired, worn)

"We have the damage estimates for Sector 7.
Considering those factories we already set up and all the investments, the damage is estimated at approximately 10 Billion gil.
The estimated cost to rebuild Sector 7 is--"

(the President interrupts to say) "We're not rebuilding." She watches as a kind of dull surprise registers on her own face.)

...(a sound, like a train crash and the breathless roar of demolition and the clanging of tuneless bells and a storm underwater and hard, distant laughter all at once. There is the familiar slouch and shrug of Reno's shoulders-- and the Sector 7 plate is breaking, is falling through the air and (we're not rebuilding) and there is nothing but dust (so much dust) and screaming. It's like the end of the world.)

...(a familiar hallway, a familiar office and she sees him seated at his desk, but there is blood here (so much blood) and the President is pinned to the top of his heavy desk like a beetle to a card-- by a long, bright sword. Beyond the door, the hallway is eerily silent.)

A voice she does not recognize is speaking, words falling through the hush and settling in her mind like coins at the bottom of a well.
"No human could've done this."

... (a question he's never asked before, sounding more like the leader of a gang of thugs than the President of Shinra, of Gaia, of Everything.)
"What's the problem, Reeve? You want out?"

...

It's been a few days since Reeve's wish was granted. She can't seem to process these things that aren't proper memories. What are they, lies? Partial truths? Possible futures? Even though the Reno she knows in the Garden is not the Reno she witnessed dropping the plate on the residential area beneath Sector 7, she can't seem to shake the sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. All those lives-- she can't understand.

There is only one sword like the one pinning the President to his desk in her dreams. What does it mean? She isn't sure she wants to understand. "No human could have done this." But then how could it be the General?

But of all things, it's the question addressed to herself that frightens her most.

"What's the problem, Reeve? You want out?"

"I remember that morning. I'd been up all night. I had heartburn from the too-spicy takeaway I'd ordered to keep me going, my eyes were tired and so were my hands. But when you took your first steps, Cait, said your first words, it all fell away. I could have run up and down all of the early-morning fogged streets of all of the levels of my suddenly beautiful city, laughing like a mad man, like a free man-- like a new father. That's what I was, in a way. Even though you grew so fast, learned so much, became a friend and an intellectual foil when I needed one, you were always my child. My first child.
There are newer models Cait, complete with all of the fixes and improvements I could dream up (and that you could critique, when I let you get your paws on the plans), but they won't ever replace you. How could they? I made you, but you made yourself the individual you were.
I'll love them all, those bright-eyed kittens in their smart black-and-white suits, and there will always be that first moment-- but there is only one very first moment, and that one belongs to you."

Personality:

Arrogant showoffy sod. The end.

...no, wait, not the end.

Sherlock Holmes is, yes, an arrogant, showoffy sod. He's very intelligent, yes, but he's also the type to insult people by deducing, say, their entire life stories from some minute detail about them, and saying their private issues out loud. He thinks very highly of himself, as Irene Adler once says in Scandal, "No, I think you're damaged, delusional and believe in a higher power. In your case, it's yourself," and as seen pretty much every day. He thinks that everyone around him is an idiot, and makes no secret of it. He's blunt and straightforward about his opinions and what he's deduced--he won't sugarcoat it for you just to soothe your fragile ego.

Unfortunately, that same bluntness can also be described as, well, tactlessness. He's been known to shout that he wanted a "nice juicy murder" for Christmas. At Santa Claus. In front of a bunch of kids and their parents. He also gets excited by serial killers, because according to him, "there's always something to look forward to". Sometimes it's just a bad case of timing (see: The Hounds of Baskerville, when he finally solves the case and is going, "This case, Henry! It's been brilliant." After Henry Knight, his client, has just discovered that the man he thought was his father's friend actually killed him and, beforehand, almost ate his gun), but at other times, he just has no sense of what to say.

And most times, it's deliberate. He doesn't really care what other people think about him, so long as he gets cases, so long as he doesn't get bored. He also does not care if his clients are important or not, he makes it very clear to them that he only wants the interesting cases. He's the sort of person who, if he's wearing only a bedsheet at the time, would refuse to put his clothes on if he had to go to Buckingham Palace. (And yes, it did happen. See Scandal.)

But he is very intelligent. He wouldn't be Sherlock Holmes, if he wasn't. Aside from being able to deduce something from someone at a glance, he's also written an article on 243 different types of tobacco ash on his website (later taken down), managed to crack a code that baffled Britain's best cryptographer in less than eight seconds, and solved a case while at home wrapped in a bedsheet, among other things. The only thing he doesn't know is the solar system, general pop culture and anything that does not relate to solving crimes.

He also describes himself as a "high-functioning sociopath". Don't ask me how it works, I'm no psychologist, but apparently, it means he doesn't really care for others. Which is, as the series goes on, completely false. He does care for other people, he just has a weird way of showing it, and he doesn't have many people he cares for, owing to his personality and general attitude towards others. But when he does care for someone, it's to the point where he's fiercely protective of them--going so far as to throw someone out the window for Mrs. Hudson and, later on, to throw himself off a building so John, Mrs. Hudson and Lestrade won't get shot.

Doesn't mean he won't manipulate them, though. He can be rather manipulative when he feels like it, often using what he's learned about someone against them, or pretending to be someone he's not to get what he wants or needs. He's used a morgue attendant named Molly Hooper's crush on him to be able to see some bodies that she doesn't have the authority to take out (see, The Blind Banker), and put sugar in John's coffee in the belief that there was a drug of some sort in the sugar (see, Hounds, and no there wasn't, which just goes to show that not even Sherlock is infallible). He's also a very good actor, on one occasion pretending to be a recently-mugged vicar to get into someone's house (see, Scandal).

Throughout this app there's been mentions of his only taking interesting cases. It's because he's...well, you could say he's an addict to the feeling he gets when he solves a particularly baffling case. He practically craves that high, though cigarettes and nicotine patches seem to be an acceptable substitute, so if he's denied a case and access to nicotine, he's liable to throw a temper tantrum, point harpoons at people and generally be meaner than usual (as seen in Hounds). And simple cases won't do it for him, he wants the ones that baffle even the police, the ones that seem almost impossible to solve.

He's also a terrible flatmate. Won't talk or eat for days, plays violin at 2 AM, keeps body parts in the kitchen (sometimes beside the food), shoots the walls when he's bored...he's generally not much good at keeping house, and he doesn't see any reason as to why he should change that.

So. In summation, Sherlock is an arrogant git who, nevertheless, has his redeeming factors.

Abilities:
- Deductive abilities: pretty obvious already, but he's very good at deducing things. He can tell a person's life story at a glance, though something sometimes trips him up. (Irene Adler and Jim Moriarty hold the honor of having thrown off his trademark scan.)
- Mind Palace: it's, basically, a mind mapping technique where you deposit memories and facts somewhere in your head. For some reason Sherlock's chosen a palace. Don't ask.
- Reasonably good at combat, though he's probably never formally trained. He prefers guns.
- And speaking of guns, he's also rather adept at shooting. This is the man who shot a smiley face into the wall.
- Very good at playing the violin.

Writing sample:
(Notes: the character this sample is about isn't Sherlock himself, but another person from another canon. Said sample has been lifted from one of my more recent fics, but if you want, I can write another one!)

It’s as he’s walking back to the hotel that he bumps into someone. Or, well, to be exact, he collides into a brick wall, except brick walls don’t move. And they certainly don’t wear green-and-purple monstrosities with yellow-and-red trousers.

…who even wears those these days? Outside of the Fools’ Guild, anyway.

“Oh, I’m so terribly sorry,” a voice booms, and William thinks, Oh, yes, there go my eardrums. “I wasn’t looking! Clumsy of me, really…”

“No,” he manages, “it’s fine. It’s fine, really.”

He staggers to his feet and almost chokes back a groan.

Oh, he’d recognize that face anywhere.

“Mr. Wintler,” he begins, “I thought you weren’t allowed to travel to London.”

The man gives him a blank stare, then laughs. “Oh, but I’ve always been in London!” he exclaims. “You must be mistaking me for my cousin.”

…oh, gods, Wintler has a cousin. Well, it isn’t like they probably share the same poor sense of humorous vegetables in common, right?

“And you,” Wintler’s cousin continues, “must be William de Worde, right? My cousin’s told me all about you! You’re famous in our family, the bloke who started the Ankh-Morpork times!”

“I’m flattered, really,” William weakly replies. “But I should really go, I have to get back to my hotel…”

“Don’t go yet!” the other man bellows, and again his eardrums are ringing with the sheer force. Doesn’t he know how to turn down the volume on his voice? “It’s just that I’ve got a really funny leek for you…”

I really should’ve expected that.

“Actually, sir,” he finally says, “I’m not here for humorous vegetables, I’m here for the Sherlock Holmes story. Please dump your funny leek somewhere, I’ve had quite enough of vegetables for a lifetime, especially ones that have a silly shape or a human face.”

Unfortunately, the man is, after all, built like a brick wall, and could probably mess up his head and break his arms if he so chooses, and so somehow the words get rearranged and scrambled from brain to mouth into, “Erm, really?”

The man beams. “Yep!”

“Well, unfortunately,” he manages to say, “I’m rather peckish right now, and whatever vegetable you might have on hand may just be eaten. And I don’t have a camera so I can take a picture of it before I do, so. You can save it for later, perhaps?”

He silently revels in his victory as the man sighs. “Okay,” he says. “I’ll bring a camera tomorrow, then! And then you can put it in your newspaper, and we can all have a laugh the next family reunion.”

“Yes,” he weakly says. “That’s…rather thoughtful of you. Thank you. Please go, though, I’d like to go back to my hotel.”

Personality:
His Organization Days

Steadfast, stubborn, yet beneath it all? Reflective with a mellow kindness.

Or at least as much as a Nobody can be. An individual said to possess no emotions.

For someone 'born' without memories, Roxas comes off as a surprisingly complex individual although his desire for a simple life sometimes seems to contradict that. A life where he can just spend his days on the clock tower with his two best friends. Something that he earnestly strives to keep in tact throughout his existence. These simple times with his friends are what matters the most to him. What makes him the most content. It's in those times that he can be comfortable and happy, gladly taking jabs at his friends and getting them in return with false protests and laughter. Around them, he becomes animated and warm. Where his kindheartedness surfaces and reflects a muted sense of his Other's fond attitude.

Another part of Sora that Roxas seems to mirror is his confidence, specifically in bearing the keyblade. Even in his early days as part of the Organization, he remarks to Axel after one of his first missions that he 'could have done it blindfolded'. In a way, perhaps the keyblade brings him a sense of security. A sense of something that gives him value and helps define his existence, even as he later questions why he has it in the first place. The keyblade was something that made him 'exceptional' as Xigbar once put it. A tool that no other Organization members could use other than he and Xion (which makes one wonder just what the Organization was doing all those years beforehand). And his proficiency grounds him. Makes him happy in some sense and gives him purpose as Xemnas once emphasized he would be given by joining their ranks. Roxas himself simply accepting things at face value at first, even, for a long period of time.

In that sense of simplicity though, Roxas can be taken as naive. Which he is in a lot of ways. While he does have the convenience of having Sora's memories to go by, he yet remains oblivious to many things. The simplest concepts that a Somebody would take for granted such as the why someone would worry about someone else go right over his head at first. In the beginnings, he doesn't even know what a best friend is. This, among many other things, is something heavily taught through Axel and in some part by his travels throughout the worlds. And something he may even still indeed be naive to in some aspects (considering his last words to Xion are "Who else will I have ice cream with?").

That isn't to say he's ignorant though nor chooses to be that way. In fact, quite to the contrary, Roxas is incredibly curious. Ever play the game of twenty questions? Triple it and that seems to be often times what many of the Organization members contend with throughout his early days. If he doesn't know something, he'll seek to know. To understand. To 'commit it to memory'. And with that in mind, when Roxas doesn't know something, he doesn't typically hesitate to ask for the most part (only really avoiding it depending on the attitude of the person he's asking at first; he didn't really like to rock the boat). His curiosity blends well into his honesty. Just like if he doesn't know, he'll let someone know, whatever he says is whatever he thinks.

At first, it may come off that Roxas just never really knew to use digression. And at the start, he didn't. Because he didn't know what that was. But even as he grows, like Sora, Roxas just isn't one to lie. He wears if not his heart then his thoughts on his sleeve, mirroring his Somebody, too, in that respect. Making him easy to read. There's a good chance he doesn't even know what it is to lie at first, too. But then as his develops through the unintentional instigation of his friends, he realizes how much the Organization and even his friend, Axel, is withholding from him. So, while perhaps at first honesty was something he didn't even really think about-- it was just part of who he was --it later becomes a core value of his due to his constant frustration and confusion that revolves around his two best friends. Roxas once even shouts at Axel in his later days, "Friends are supposed to be honest with each other!"

Being left in the dark is something that Roxas despises. He hates it when people hide things from him and tends to snap out in anxiety and anger when he realizes people aren't being honest with him. When he does though, Roxas isn't one for petty insults, more focused on seeking answers. Even if he's simply trying to overcome someone who is an obstacle to him such as when he faces off with Saix, he never directly calls him a jerk. And the same can be said for Riku. About the only snappy comment he makes towards him is when he shouts at the other boy to shut up. Roxas is very concentrated on keeping himself pieced together and holding to what he believes. And he'll stubbornly follow through with that intent.

He also isn't someone who will just sit around and let things roll as they are, preferring to dive into the heart of the problem and consider the consequences only later on in. And it's usually only when he's hit a wall. This act first, think later policy can tend to get him into trouble at times, but it has had its upsides when the situation has called for a lack of hesitation. Still, there are times that he could use someone to point him in the right direction. But they usually have to bar his way completely in order for that to happen. Once set on a goal, Roxas is stubborn to pull through. His lack of trust in people in later days makes it even harder to stop him from what he intends on doing once he has his mind made up.

When he loses all faith in the Organization and Axel, Roxas begins to second guess people and expresses a considerable amount of caution and distrust for others. This can be attested to the secrets kept from him, Axel's betraying silence despite the knowledge he had, and the mistreatment and eventual annihilation of Xion, all things of which he may begin to slowly recall- potentially retriggered if they were to appear there and if he were to let down his walls. Roxas has been continuously manipulated by the Organization for their own selfish motives, using him as a means to their end. And it's something that has also caused him a lot of anxiety. Anyone who uses him is written off pretty quickly as being someone he never wants to associate with.

That isn't to say he cannot and will not befriend others. It just takes time and patience with him. In reality, as solid as he tries to be in his ambitions and his sense of self, Roxas does carry an underlying fear. One that makes him jerk at the mention of name, Sora. He really wants to believe he is who he is, but he knows that things aren't always what they seem. How exactly did he end up with the keyblade? And just who is Sora? Despite his lingering thoughts though, there's just a bigger piece of him that just doesn't particularly want to accept that things aren't how he knows them to be and thus he rejects it with a boldness. "I am me! Nobody else!"

Those who can get past his aloofness though will tend to find a good friend. Protective, loyal, and always more than happy to spend his afternoon on the clock tower eating ice cream with you.

His Summer Vacation

In the simulation, Roxas does act quite a bit different. First and foremost, Roxas' memories have been radically altered. He has become familiar with the every day "normal" human routine. His life consists of chilling out with his friends, Hayner, Pence, and Olette, during summer vacation while they dread the downer that school will be coming up soon. In general, he has gained the demeanor of a typical teenager. All his memories prior have been disconnected from the original chains, compliments of Naminé. This has brought out a lot of his softer side- the kind one that just enjoys sitting on the clock tower and eating ice cream with his friends. Ironic, really. Considering he continues that habit with his simulated gang.

Then he has less drastic changes. He's prone to be more of a space cadet. He thinks a lot and often times is caught looking like the most introverted of the group. Given, he's nearing the peak of his connection with Sora though, it's to be anticipated. He's constantly bombarded with weird dreams about that boy in red- and then his world only becomes more fragmented by the strange encounters he starts to face off with even in his awoken state. For someone so insistent on keeping a grip on himself and holding onto the reality he believes to be true, he slowly puts himself at a distance from it anyway without really noticing as the days progress. It isn't that he's accepting of these tidings though.

In fact, Roxas tends to be very dependent of his friends in the simulation in a way. One moment is when he loses the money that they have collected in order to go to the beach. While at first he's insistent on there being some strange man in a coat who took it, when his friends tell him they didn't see anyone, Roxas lets the matter drop. While he is shown to be having second thoughts, with how strange things have been lately for him (and apparently his weirdness tolerance being pretty high), he just tries to brush it off at first.

Still, this isn't to say he's completely disconnected from his friends. He values them highly as he always has, a trait carried over from his Organization days. He gets involved. Even for being as quiet as he can be, Roxas serves to be the one to be the decision maker in the group. The first day alone, while Hayner announces his frustrations, Roxas is the one that suggests that they should be concerned about clearing their names and then act from there. That doesn't always mean he's level-headed though as later that day, it's him that fakes out Seifer into thinking Roxas is going to do what he says. Yet then he takes up a struggle bat against him. This might be considered a ghost of his rebellious side that was born at the end of his Organization days- one further prompted by the strange matters going on as the days progress. And while part of him wants answers like his prior self, the other side of him just wants to run away back to the normalcy he's pretty certain he knows.

Currently, he thinks that Naminé was a daydream of some sort... but then another part of him is having second thoughts. Why does 'the Keyblade' seem so familiar? And who was that pickpocket and what about the guys in white? So many questions and no answers in sight.
