WHAT TO KNOW
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to.

Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful.

In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character.

The application page from the former site can be found here.

MISC. RULES
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other.

Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request.

There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying.

If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite.

If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor.

Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans.

APPLICATION IN DETAIL
Your name:
Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference.
Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted.
Other characters played at Passing:

Character name:
Character fandom:
Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options.
Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from.
Importing development from old game? If yes, where from?
Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously.

In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves.

Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different.

Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon.

Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice.

Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section.

Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character.

Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed.

Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or [community profile] dear_mun are all fine.

Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread.

These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly.

Character fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Version: v2+
Canon point: After leaving Neverland with Kairi
Importing development from old game? No
Background: Here

Changes from canon, if AU: I’m linking this because it is very long. I will post it if I am asked to.

Personality: There are many thing the same, and many things different, between this Sora and the canon one. Let’s start with what’s the same.

He’s still a ball of energy. This is something that has aided him, and was seen even when he was young, impatiently waiting on the dock in Birth by Sleep, instead of just standing still to wait. Which also means he’s a bit on the impatient side, too. He even called to Riku to hurry up and come over. He deals with grief by getting angry—evidenced best in canon by his reaction to Goofy’s supposed death, as well as the destruction of the islands. He doesn’t mope—he instead acts and seeks to quickly eliminate the cause of the grief.

Like the canon Sora, as well, he is loyal. However, the degree differs greatly. While canon Sora isn’t blindly loyal, AU!Sora is. This is due to his relative isolation growing up, as well as careful actions on Ansem’s part. Sora has had no reason to betray him, and with a story spun to put the Heartless King in a benevolent light, it was all too easy to earn the boy’s complete trust. This loyalty would carry over to other relationships, too, as all he remembers in life is this degree of loyalty. He also knows how it feels to be betrayed, and, being Sora, would never wish that on anyone.

Also like canon Sora, he is very dependent on bonds. Perhaps abnormally so. However, the lack of bands has severely affected him. Interaction with other humans isn’t something he’s good at, so he’s become very socially awkward over the years. His main interaction with people has been watching them from afar as they suffer, hardly a normal situation. And while he wants friends and to be a normal boy deep down, this is buried under layers of everything Ansem taught him.

Which brings us to differences.

Sora doesn’t understand affection. The most he’s gotten since he was five was the occasional headpat for a job well done. Hugging and kissing and shaking hands is entirely beyond him. It confuses him, and if any of this were shown toward him, he would likely freak out due to the foreign nature and not understanding it. Playing games is also very beyond him. He was raised a warrior, after all, and there was no one to play with.

He has severe abandonment issues. It is his greatest fear and, by far, the easiest thing to use to get him worked up. His memories of events involved with his kidnapping are fuzzy, and years of being with Ansem has warped what memories he does have into the lies he was fed. Memories of his parents now show them as cruel, just waiting for him to leave. This means he also has very low self-esteem.

Darkness is comforting as opposed to light, and he is far more knowledgeable in the matters of darkness than his canon counterpart. Light is viewed as disgusting and needing to be erased. He also sees much less wrong with people dying, and doesn’t have the optimistic view of being able to save everyone that his canon counterpart holds.

Abilities:Sora’s abilities are quite few, and reflect Riku’s in Kingdom Hearts I. That is, he is able to summon Heartless, control them, walk the corridors of darkness (in the dark suit, which is Riku’s in the canon timeline), summon Soul Eater, perform dark versions of spells, etc. This includes the enhanced senses.

Writing sample: He gasps for breath, falling to one knee beside the bed he’s laid his precious friend across. Kairi is safe. Riku won’t have her. He’ll come here, and then they can use him for what they need to and be done with him. Then, Sora can finally kill him—erase the last remnant of all of his pain and past. But that’s not right now. Right now, he smiles, standing up and sitting next to the comatose girl.

“Soon, Kairi. Soon, you’ll wake up, and then… Then we can be real friends…” he whispers, brushing her hair from her face. But he can’t think about that right now, he has work to do. Sora stands and leaves her there, ordering two Defenders to not let anyone in his room unless it’s his father. After that, he walks, allowing the dark suit to melt away in wisps of darkness.

Everything is finally coming together. Soon, he’ll be able to ascend to an existence of just the heart—become a Heartless himself. The worlds will be plunged into darkness, humans erased from existence so they no longer harm others. Heartless will reign supreme. Yes, all of their plans are coming together perfectly…

Character name: Sora
Character fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Version: V1
Canon point: Birth by Sleep, a few hours after the game’s ending.
Importing development from old game? Memories from his first time at One Passing Night.
Background: Sora’s Wiki Page. Just as a note, I've been avoiding the wiki lately due to a desire to remain unspoiled for the most recent game in the series. I apologize for any issues this may cause in advance, as I don't know the current state of that entry (except that, from what others have told me, it's chock-full of spoilers).
Changes from canon, if AU:

Sora was not in One Passing Night for very long last time he was here and, as a result, he was not dramatically changed by what he had experienced in his dreams. He hadn't even progressed very far from the canon point he was initially brought in from.

But bonds of the heart are critical in Kingdom Hearts canon, and Sora had begun forming plenty of those. He met many people in his dreams - people from far away worlds, and even people from his own future. People that he would like to see again, though he doesn't know any of them very well yet. On top of that, he saw things in his dreams that he never would have wondered about otherwise - sadness, suffering, loneliness. People who needed help or kind words. This has begun to solidify a desire in Sora to help others and make their lives better somehow, though he isn't quite sure how to articulate that in words or even fully understand what it is he's hoping for.

These are only the first few steps in a long journey; but every step is important, in the end.

Personality:
At first glance, there’s nothing particularly striking or unique about this child…and anyone who thinks that would, for the most part, be right. Sora is just a normal kid. Though he may have a big destiny, Sora at a young age lives a typical life on the quiet, unchanging world of Destiny Islands. He spends his days with his best friend Riku either exploring or playing games and, like most boys his age, enjoys being around people and always has to have something to do. But that positivity and caring for others that he has when he’s older is just as present when he’s a child as it is when he’s saving the worlds.

What one will notice most easily about Sora is his cheerful personality. He’s generally a happy child, and not much can get him down. He tries to be nice to everyone, and he loves meeting people and making friends. On that same note, he often trusts quickly and without thought. The way he greeted Aqua in-game was the perfect example of this – even though he didn’t recognize her from around the islands, and even though she probably looked different from most people that he knew, he answered her questions cheerfully and without any sort of hesitation. This isn’t because he’s stupid, but because he’s still only a child, and usually he just doesn’t know any better - he's not suspicious of anyone because, generally, he never has to be.

On top of his general good-heartedness, Sora is usually very curious and energetic. There’s a reason he and Riku have tried to explore everything on their play island. He likes learning, adventure, and discovering new things, and this love of exploration would help him on his quests later in life. And when he hears a ‘monster’ in a mysterious cave? He’s going to be the first to want to try to go inside and beat it…but not by himself. No adventure is fun without the company of a friend, and neither is anything else! In fact, he’ll enjoy almost anything if he has someone to do it with.

He can get upset, of course, just like any other child. Sora can pitch a fit when something important to him goes wrong, or whine if he’s lost something or gets bored, or find himself in a variety of bad moods. But the important part is that he bounces back easily. When he’s down, cheering Sora up isn’t tough at all.

But the one thing that will really make him upset is seeing someone hurt or sad. Sora will do almost anything he can to help someone who needs it…after all, the first thing he ever did was give some of the light in his heart to a boy who really needed it. He’s happy when the people around him are happy – it’s that simple.

Overall, yes, Sora is just a child – an energetic boy with a good heart, who cares deeply for his friends.

His experiences during his last time in One Passing Night did very little to alter his personality, though they have begun to increase his desire to help others who need it. Otherwise, though, Sora is still Sora; a little boy who has a lot of growing up to do.

Abilities: Though Sora has a strong heart – which is very meaningful in the Kingdom Hearts universe, especially in his case – right now, he has no special powers or abilities (unless waving around a wooden sword like a pro counts).

Writing sample:

If there was one thing Sora hated more than anything, it was being sick. There was nothing to do when he was sick besides sit around in bed and eat soup. He couldn’t go outside because Mom didn’t want him to get worse, and most of the time Riku couldn’t come visit because his parents didn’t want him to catch whatever Sora had. He didn’t even like not having to go to school – being at school was WAY better than doing nothing all day.

So even if he knew he was sick, he tried not to act like it. He would try really hard to act like everything was normal. But, for some reason, it never worked. His parents always noticed…or if they didn’t, Riku would notice almost right away. This time, it was his dad who figured it out. Before Sora even had the chance to leave the house for school, he had already been picked up (because he wasn’t just going to go by himself, of course), put back in bed, and had a thermometer in his mouth. A fever sealed the deal – he wasn’t going anywhere that day.

But now what? Sora again picked up the book that his mom had brought him, flipping through the pages and trying to focus. But not two minutes passed before he gave up again, putting it right back down on the bed. Reading had never been able to hold Sora’s attention for long – he liked the stories, but the actual reading part wasn’t even close to being as fun. Besides, it was kinda cold, and that was making it even harder to focus. Or, at least, it felt cold.

He pulled the blankets up and got as far under them as he could without covering his eyes, hoping that would help. Then, a moment later, he yawned, realizing how sleepy he felt. He hadn’t even thought about it before.

Well…maybe it couldn’t hurt to nap for a little while. At least in his dreams, he wouldn’t be stuck in bed.

Other characters played at Passing: Zack Fair, Ratchet (V1)

Character name: Alister Azimuth
Character fandom: Ratchet and Clank
Version: V2
Canon point: Before the games even start, dating back twenty years to the assault on Fastoon.
Importing development from old game? Nope.
Background: http://ratchet.wikia.com/wiki/Alister_Azimuth

Changes from canon, if AU: Because the war occurs before the games canonically even start, Alister never becomes the infamous 'exile' of Polaris.

In fact, after being resurrected by the Vullards, for the longest time, be begins to truly believe he is one, traveling the worlds alongside them and collecting new and interesting 'projects'. He only has vague memories of what had even occurred on Fastoon, though there is no recollection of his name, title, or position in the Lombax Praetorian Guard. It's doubtful he even remembers Kaden, his best friend in which he watched die before he had his own throat slit by Tachyon.

The shoddy cybernetic work also limits what he was capable of, when he had a real, physical body. Using his Praetorian Omniwrench only results in him short-circuiting himself, so the former General relies on his own physical strength to fight. He still has knowledge of circuitry and mechanics, able to repair a part of himself, or modify when the part is too worn down.

Personality: General Alister Azimuth had been a mischievous child at one point in his life, having grown up the way he had. And even in his elder years, this hasn't changed. Once you really break through the 'hardened general' guise, one can see that Alister can be a friendly, outgoing companion. While he might not be as spry as he had been in his younger years, it's just in his nature to go out and have a good time, making an adventure out of everything, even unintentionally.

But this isn't without faults, as he's had a lot happen in his long life.

Let's start at the root.

Yes, he is a strong, loyal companion to have most of the time. Although, at the same time, Alister can be... paranoid, and a little defensive. In fact, there are quite a few times where he shifts between 'best pal' and 'maybe I should watch my tongue'. Because you don't talk about his personal life - or more so, the events on Fastoon. He's watched his entire species fall from his own fault, assumed his best friend's son to be dead and watched said friend's death. On the run for a good twenty years, Alister's solitude and guilt ate away at him in that time, but he's also made a resolution to himself - nobody would cross him like that ever again.

And he certainly wouldn't allow a disaster like that to happen again. No matter what.

At heart, Alister is a rebel. He's labeled as one, and he'll act like one, evading Nefarious' forces for as long as he's had, and taking them out with the needed brutality. Stubborn as a brick wall and defiant, he'll stand his ground, physically and metaphorically, fighting for what he thinks is right. And at times, it's only what he thinks is right. This could have a very skewed and disjointed view, and even insane at times. Whatever it takes to get the job done, and Alister takes his job very seriously.

Speaking of 'jobs', Alister finds time to focus his mind with projects on the side, making him something of a workaholic. Sometimes the work and the exercise intertwine with each other, causing him to keep fit because of it. Keeping his base secure, getting out and causing trouble while also trying to learn as much as possible for anything he needs to do. He spent twenty years doing so, and these habits won't be broken easily.

Barring the negatives, Alister can also be extremely protective of those he considers his kin, even at the risk of his own well-being. When he has something to protect, a better purpose than he'd been living, he takes it in. Encompasses it, holds it to his being because that is what he needs to do. This, in turn, makes him a little obsessive, though it works in favour when the situation calls for it.

AU: In the AU, he's still gone through the shock of losing his entire race, though it's combined with having been dead for several months and already gone through deterioration. And while the circuitry allows his body to remain in a stable, consistent condition, the old General's mind has gone down and out for some time.

Due to having his throat slashed by Tachyon, as the final blow, he has difficulty piecing words together. But he's still as bold as he had been, walking right up to outsiders, wandering about, and taking in all he can from them. A part of him wants to relearn what he lost, even if what it had been was something better off forgotten.

Abilities: Alister was once the General of the Lombax Praetorian Guard, so combat just comes naturally. And even with his years of solitude, he hasn't allowed himself to slow down in the slightest.

Combined with the natural Lombax agility, Alister can leap giant chasms without breaking a sweat, swiftly dodge enemy fire, and easily take out an armoured tank all on his own. And while he does focus on pure brute strength, Alister also has the assistance of the Praetorian Omniwrench, capable of firing off enormous bursts of energy, and his arsenal of mines and bombs.

There are times, however, when Alister will think more with actions rather than his head.

He will act on sheer impulse, which could be helpful in the field, but also extremely deadly. If pushed enough, he could turn on the very people fighting by his side, making him mentally and emotionally unstable. Fight with him, but take caution.

You could be on the receiving end of that deadly wrench.

AU: Since Alister at all has difficulty using his wrench, his 'weapons' and bombs are built into his system. Taking in any kind of scrap, he can create the explosives straight from scratch, firing them off with a mechanism in his left arm.

His movements are still more limited to what the modifications can handle, meaning he's not as swift as he was, but he can still hold himself in a battle if need be.

Canon point: X10, after Kamui seals the Shinken (Holy/Divine Sword)

Background: As You Wish
Brief Wiki Entry

Changes from canon, if AU: N/A

Personality: Initially, Fuuma is rather kind and gentle, someone who would offer to help someone else out just to be of help and not expect anything in return for that aid. Despite that, he can appear somewhat intimidating due to his reserved and stoic nature. He also shows something of a small stubborn streak when Kamui comes back to Tokyo after being gone for a number of years and refuses to have anything to do with either Fuuma or his sister. When Kamui rebuffs his attempts to reestablish their friendship, he doesn't give up the task and continues to be there for Kamui until the boy finally caves in.

Unfortunately, shortly after this Kamui makes his rather fateful choice and everything ends up going to hell in a handbasket so to speak. Due to the fact that Fuuma is Kamui's "twin star" and counterpart in this war they're involved in, Fuuma goes from protective friend to deadly enemy faster than Kamui can blink.

At first it seems that the kind and gentle Fuuma is now gone, and the Earth's 'Kamui' even states this is so to Kamui, several times throughout their next meetings. Yet, there still seems to be something within the older boy that is tender, gentle and kind yet despite his apparent destructive actions. This is shown in the course of events slowly after Fuuma has collected all of his 'angels' to his side. One of the most obvious in his interactions with a little girl he meets within the Ebisu mall. He is cheerful, smiling and almost even playful towards her, perfectly content it would seem to play the fool for her entertainment until her mother comes to collect her. When she leaves, he warns her to leave the the area quickly and seems to wait a moment until she has left his sight before he proceeds onward to the task which had originally brought him to the place. He seems also to make an effort to even try to help those who are trying to halt his destructive ways. Though with the way he tends to go about this 'helping', it isn't always too obvious to the intended target of his aid that he is helping them.

Then there is Kamui; most of the time in his dealings with Kamui, it is 'Kamui' and not Fuuma who's dealing with the boy. There are moments where it would seem that some part that is Fuuma seems to come through, but these moments rarely last for long and are usually staged by the man in his constant attempts to get Kamui to quit deluding himself and get him to realize just what it is he actually wants...which is not what he says it is. Unfortunately it would seem most of these meetings end with one or the other (or at times both of them) bleeding.

Outside of his work as 'Kamui', Fuuma can be very charismatic, humorous and rather perceptive of those he interacts with. Of course when you can see into a person's heart, it's hard to not act on what you see there. During the times when he does act on it, he can be rather sad about the it, or casual or even cruel about it. As one of the Angels of the Chi no Ryuu once put it; "It's as if he has thrown away his own self...to act like 'someone else', according to the other person's wish." In other words, one can never be too certain just what Fuuma might do at any given moment, since most of his movements now are due largely to the wishes and desires of those around him, including the Earth itself.

Abilities:
Wish Sensing; From the world around him to the people he interacts with, Fuuma can sense (or hear) the wishes/desires of those around him as well as the earth itself. At times he will grant the wishes of the people he interacts with, though the phrase "be careful of what you wish for" is doubly important when it comes to Fuuma. Of course the bad thing about this ability is the tiny fact he can't ignore these wishes. Even when he's away from everyone and alone, he still is forced to deal with the wish of the planet itself.

He also can't help the small fact that on occasion when he meets someone, they will see or feel that he looks or feels almost exactly like someone else that they know and/or cherish. The only time this won't happen is if the person knows that the one they care most about is dead and gone and not coming back, if that is the case then Fuuma will just be Fuuma to them.
Examples: First (X15), Second (X18)

One who Hunts the majesty of God;
There are a number of powers which were unlocked once Fuuma became 'Kamui' of the Chi no Ryuu; first and foremost being those of a psychic variety. He can manipulate his surroundings to aid him in whatever effort he's currently working toward. The ability shown the most seems to be telekinesis or psychokinesis. One good example of manipulation being the time he took perfectly ordinary soda cans and turn them into spiritual bombs to destroy the Ebisu Kekkai. He can also enter the dreams of people, and on occasion even manipulate them to suit himself. The man can also take as well as dish out an impressive amount of pain. Example of taking it being found shortly after his killing of Saki, where Kamui stabs his hand completely through Fuuma's shoulder; which leads us to the next lovely ability of his, rapid healing. The other minor things of note are the simple fact he can force his way into the kekkai's of the Seals (though he can't leave them without either seriously injuring the Seal/killing the Seal or just waiting until they take it down themselves); and the small fact he has no noticeable aura to speak of, allowing him to in effect sneak up on people who usually rely on sensing the aura of anyone who might try such a feat.

Writing sample:
Golden eyes lifted to silently study the overhead dome and the water above it. When he'd first came to in this place, clothes and hair soaked to the skin, Fuuma had briefly entertained the idea he had been pulled into a dreamscape. It didn't take long though to disabuse himself of that idea. That left him with the minor mystery of just how he'd gone from standing on a building in Tokyo to waking up here flat on his back, wet and surprisingly tired.

A mystery which grew more when he noted the unexpected quiet where there hadn't been any such quiet for the last several months. Either something had occurred to silence or change the Earth's wish, or he was no longer on it. Since he rather doubted the former, that left the other, despite how impossible it sounded. Turning his gaze away from the water and dome overhead, he let it rest upon the softly glowing coral and the unfamiliar buildings surrounding him and it. He doubted he'd get any answers from the few people he saw, especially since a few of those people only ended up raising further questions to mind. Thus he turned his attention to the starfish shaped device he'd found near him upon waking. It was easy enough to figure out how to work it, despite its odd shape.

"Hello, if anyone is watching this, could you tell me where I am currently?"

Character fandom: Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete
Version: V1
Canon point: Post Northern Crater incident; seconds after shooting the mighty NetGun to safe Rufus from being a Presidential Pancake
Importing development from old game? Nope
Background: Final Fantasy Wiki and Wikipedia

Changes from canon, if AU: N/A

Personality: Where Elena had once been naïve, impetuous and often overeager, cursed with a loose tongue that would from time to time let accidentally loose secret information, she has grown into herself and her role as a Turk. Be it a mission, a short task, or even filling out paperwork - Elena takes every aspect of her job with the utmost dedication and determination to complete it within the defined perimeters with little deviation from the objectives. Anything that gets in the way of completing her assignment, be it an individual, personal feelings, or an object, is removed with extreme prejudice.

A good deal had happened since her first days as a Turk, the frustration by Reno's utter lack of professionalism and devil-may-care attitude, deepened to greater tolerance and understanding of his odd personality, has shifted to that of a calm bystander, watching with mild amusement. Where she had been easily stressed out about minimally stressing situations, now she takes things with a cool stride. That isn’t to say she’s softened as a Turk, for that certainly isn’t the case. If I a mission required leaving a man behind to ensure its completion, Elena would do so as per the Code of the Turks. However, if given the ability to complete an objective AND return home with her team intact, this would Elena's preferred choice.

All in all, the naïveté and innocence she’d had as a junior member has been slowly erased by the experiences and missions she’d encountered over the past several years. Less talkative than before, Elena is more protective of her secrets – though old habits die hard and she will at times slip more information that what is necessary – and she is less trusting of those she does not know. Since the incident at Northern Crater with the Remnant where she had been tortured for information, Elena has suffered from a (yet to be diagnosed) mild form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as increased anxiety, claustrophobia, sporadic insomnia, and mild-alcoholism. She maintains her usual processional demeanor in her day-to-day interactions to give the impression that she has moved on from the experience. However, if it is ever brought up in conversation, she is one to dance around the details as it is still – and forever would be – a very delicate subject.

Abilities: Elena didn't get those five Elite Emblems for nothing - she's an excellent martial artist with a strong right hook. That isn't to say that Elena isn't capable with a firearm either - she did race to compete against her older sister until deciding to take her own path. Her skills were top notch , but since her experience at the Northern Crater her aim as suffered, always pulling up and to the left in the first two shots. Hours upon hours at the firing range has helped her become aware of the limitation and how to deal with it.

Writing sample:

There was little sign of life in the small office that housed the remnants of Shinra Inc. An office for each Turk, a file room, and a break room was all that was required, and all put together it didn’t even take up half of the floor they’d rented. Their once lavish lifestyle was now a cramped existence with close quarters to one another. But there had been no complaint from her, or any of the others. Not even as the holidays came around and it was quickly discovered that there would be no room for a Christmas tree. But she had made do, stringing red and green lights around her door and hanging a wimpy plastic wreath on her door. Anything to bring in some of the holiday cheer, even what little there was left of it.

Even with all the changes in the world, with all the changes within Shinra itself, some things never changed. The workload, for example, remained a steady and familiar constant. That had been a happy welcome; for fear that even the slightest change to the routine would threaten a lapse of falling off the bandwagon. So even as the snow fell quietly against the black of the evening sky, with work piling across her desk, Elena was content. Leaning back, ankles crossing delicately under her seat, she cupped her hands around the still lukewarm cup of coffee she had poured earlier. Where she had first taken it with both cream and sugar, now only one sugar would suffice, if at all.

Hazel eyes moved slowly from the ample piles of work to the slightly fogged window, an amused smile just gracing the corners of her lips. It didn’t snow much in Junon, at least not as much as it did when she had lived in Midgar. Even in that hectic, slum of a city, the fresh white snow was still beautiful and its beauty was – even if momentarily – transferred to the buildings, the streets, and the slums. And while Junon was no Midgar – and may it blessed for never being so – it too was blessed with the snow’s beauty. Elena sighed, allowing herself a moment reprieve to rest her eyes. She’d come in to work at her normal six-o’clock in the morning. She didn’t need to look at the clock hung in the hall just outside her door to know it was pushing well past eight in the evening. The bar was still open, but she’d promised herself to stay put tonight, to sleep in an awkward heap in her second-hand chair and hope she wouldn’t drool on the paperwork that never, ever, left her desk. Opening her eyes once more, she lifted her glass in a silent toast to the full moon outside. To a hopeful new year.

I don't view his wish granting as sadistic personally. Perhaps because of his new position and uncanny ability to see into a person's heart and know the desires behind their actions, their Wishes; he simply acts upon those desires, in a sense forcing the person to realize they're there. Usually, when he grants the wishes of the Seals or Angels its during their fighting over the state of the Kekkai's of Tokyo, so it can look somewhat sadistic.

It's unfounded, but I have a feeling that Fuuma's wish involves his dying at Kamui's hand instead of the other way around, something that won't happen unless Kamui realizes his actual wish instead of the one he's clung to for the majority of the manga. Whether Kamui's wish will actually counter the fatal nature of Fuuma's I don't know or not, no one but Fuuma seems to actually know Kamui's actual wish. Perhaps Kamui's wish will work in together with Fuuma's own which will resolve matters and possibly win the war for humanity. Because I don't really believe that Fuuma himself believes Humanity should perish. If he did I think, he wouldn't be helping show the flaws in their behavior to the Dragons of Heaven and actually helping them understand themselves.

He aids Yuza in regaining Inuki by putting her into a position of danger and desire to be capable of aiding her friend and comrade, which ended up in the recreation of Inuki to prevent Fuuma from harming Kamui further during that time. As Fuuma tells her after Inuki's appearance that her 'wish' to not die must have been genuine and true before departing the scene.

Likewise during his encounter with Nataku in X18, he notes Nataku's change of heart and thus the changing of his ultimate desire or wish. When Nataku firmly decides to act on that wish, Fuuma states he'll grant it for him. Unfortunately, that wish results in Nataku's death much to Karen's horror. He tries to explain that some people's wishes may make others suffer, but one should respect them regardless. Also he questions her views on harming others, making her actually reflect on his words and actions and she later realizes that perhaps sometimes a person can end up hurting someone they don't mean to hurt without even realizing it.

This I think might play an important part in the dynamic between Kamui and Fuuma, that Kamui's current false wish will end up hurting them both in the end. Also Fuuma states he'll grant Kakyou's wish, but despite Kakyou once at the beginning stating that wish was to die, Fuuma's never once actually stated he'll kill him to grant that wish. So I think that perhaps Fuuma has seen something in Kakyou besides a death wish.

I don't think he can not not see the desires or wishes of those he meets, which might actually cause someone to realize that some people are uncaring, petty, or don't really care if they live or die. This may be why he doesn't seem to care over much over the loss of life involved in his destruction of the Kekkai. If they don't care much for their life or the world and people around them, why should he care for their lives?

Which perhaps is why he purposely sent that one little girl out of the area of the Ebisu Kekkai once so that she or her mother wouldn't die in its destruction, because she genuinely wanted to live no matter what. He states after he destroys Ebsiu that finding people who don't want to die no matter what is rare in Tokyo.

I hope I understood what you wanted and answered it properly, let me know if I misunderstood though.. o7

Character name: Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot
Character fandom: BBC's Merlin
Version: V1,
Canon point: Season 4, Ep 6 Arthur will be living through the rest of the episodes in the series and beyond!
Importing development from old game? His previous interactions in OPN.
Background: http://merlin.wikia.com/wiki/Arthur_Pendragon

Personality:

On the surface Arthur can be summed up in one word, 'Clotpole', he is brash, over-confident and rude. He is supremely certain of his own abilities when it comes to fighting and woe to anyone who suggests he might not be able to defeat or hold his own against someone or something.

Due to his high status in Camelot, first as the Crown Prince and heir to the throne and now as King, few people get to know anything more about Arthur, but underneath his facade he is rather insecure. His father, King Uther put an enormous amount of pressure on him and the relationship between father and son was strained. Arthur isn't very good at interpersonal relationships, becoming flustered and awkward, especially when challenged. He has trouble explaining his feelings and expressing them.

Arthur enjoys everything to do with being a knight, he is their leader and participates in training with great enthusiasm and often picks on others weaknesses in the area of combat if he feels their skills aren't up to standard.

Arthur is used to getting his way and is very stubborn, if not childish when denied or difficulties are put in his path.

Abilities: Arthur in his own words 'has been trained to kill since birth', although that's an exaggeration he's definitely highly skilled in all forms of medieval combat, particularly sword fighting. He's very good at thinking on his feet and coming up with defence or offensive strategies.

Writing sample: The shafts of sunlight pouring into the council chambers seemed to barely move even as it felt like hours were passing.

Arthur, sitting at the head of the Council table was trying not to show his boredom too much...just a little bit, in the vain hope it would get Monmouth, who was currently flapping his lips, to sum up...whatever it was he was going on about and let this torture come to an end.

It wasn't happening, not even when Sir Leon actually let a yawn slip out. Arthur gave his right hand mind the briefest smile before resting his chin in his hand and rolling his eyes. Not for the first time he wondered how Father had put up with this, no wonder he was in such a bad mood all the time.

Thinking about the King brings Arthur up short, for months King Uther had been all but confined to his room, hardly speaking save for a few sentences here and there, his mind seemed irreparably damaged at his daughter's betrayal.

Arthur unconsciously taps his fingers on the table, thinking and worrying. Sometimes it felt almost like an insult, Morgana had betrayed Father, had betrayed all of them that was true. But Arthur was still here and always would be, wasn't that enough? Couldn't Father pull himself together for the sake of his kingdom and his people?

Voice sample:

Regular voice sample:

Thank God for training that's all I can say. If my life was nothing but councils and treaty negotiations and reading roll after roll of parchment I'd be mad, completely and utterly mad.

I probably shouldn't write something like that, with Father being the way he is. I visited him today, hoping to get something out of him, Gaius says he talks sometimes, but he didn't say a word to me. He was walking around though, looking for something or someone maybe? I'm pretty sure he didn't even know I was there. I went to Gaius afterwards and asked him exactly what Father says when he speaks...Gaius was evasive, but I finally got out of him that it's mostly about Morgana.

Morgana! I still can't - it's too - what was she thinking? I don't know if I can ever forgive her, or even if I should. She enslaved the town with an undead army for God sake! Of course, that could have been Morgause. It probably was Morgause, that sneaky, underhanded, vile...Why Morgana would follow her...she's enchanted, that's all I can come up with.

-

Damn it that was Merlin, knocking my elbow. Honestly, how he manages to walk around without ending up flat on his face is a mystery to me. I've never seen anyone so clumsy, it's embarrassing to know him sometimes.

He does know that I like to have fruit before bed though...he's just put a bowl of cherries and strawberries and oranges in front of me. I suppose I can forgive him then, for just barging on in. Or I will, once he tells me how Guinevere is going, I haven’t seen her all day.
Voice sample:

Regular voice sample:

“Come on, Merlin, how many times have we done this?” [The Crown Prince of Camelot waits impatiently for his friend servant to catch up with him. The knights of Camelot stand before him though and he decides he might as well begin making his speech, especially since Merlin seems to have tripped over and sent his helmet rolling away.]
“All right, let’s begin,” [he directs a stern look at Sir Gwaine before continuing.] “I’m not going to lie to any of you, the next few days are going to be difficult and dangerous. Now most of you have had the pleasure of having to fend off an attack by a magical beast.” [This statement is received by chuckles and shaking heads.] “But remember you can’t ever overestimate the danger a beast like this poses, especially one like this, that has someone behind it, pulling the strings.” [Arthur pauses briefly, thinking about that likely ‘someone’, then he shakes his head.] “For Camelot!”
“For Camelot!” [His knights cry and salute.
Finally Merlin arrives helmet and cape in arms.]
“Oh good, I was starting to think I was going to have to go in there without head protection.”
[Merlin, of course, has a smart remark to make to that, but then Arthur walked into that one.] “You know, you could stand to be a bit more creative, God forbid I have a boring servant. Now, look since you’re staying here -” [He gives Merlin a very stern look.]

Character name: Yoshiya ‘Joshua’ Kiryu
Character fandom: The World Ends With You
Version: V1
Canon point: Post-secret ending
Importing development from old game? No.
Background: http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Joshua

Changes from canon, if AU: N/A

Personality:
Joshua is, as Neku so eloquently puts it, a ‘jerkface.’ He’s arrogant, condescending, and really doesn’t seem to give a damn about anyone. He is clever, and uses it to manipulate people. Most of the time they don’t realize they’ve been used until it’s over. This is partly because he rarely gives a direct lie- he just knows what conclusions people will jump to if he says the right things. He can play innocent until the final moment, even though most people can tell before that he’s at least up to something.

When he’s not being cryptic, he’s usually teasing (spending a decent amount of time during the game semi-flirting with the main male character), but he himself is very hard to rile. This attitude in general makes him seem very condensending, which in ways he is, but part of it is just that he’s not great at communicating on a personal level. It’s stated that’s been alone most of his life (and presumably, death) and he’s never really had many friends. He is completely capable, if usually not willing, to communicate on a professional level, but when it comes to friendship he’s a bit out of the loop. When it comes to people in general, prior to his Game with the Conductor he was very cynical, and was growing bitter with the people and their waste of talent in his city. However, after dealing with Neku, he has become more open and more willing to see the good in others. (Even if he still acts like a jerk.)

The select few that manage to get past the exterior don’t get much in terms of a nicer personality. In fact, it usually leads to more teasing and more pushing. Joshua’s way of getting people to change isn’t to gently push, but more forcibly shove and force them to face the things they don’t want to. It helps that he’s such a jerk that people usually want to prove him wrong. However, he will work to protect the people he cares about, even though as the Composer he can’t spend time with them like a normal person.

Overall, Joshua is kind of a jerk, especially to people he doesn’t care about. However, he’s got a soft spot for people he cares about and really does understand that people as a whole are worth it.

Abilities:
As Composer, Joshua has a lot of powers, some of which are probably left out. In his RG (teenage) form, he can use his cellphone to drop large objects on people’s heads, and summon beams of light while levitating. When fighting with Neku, he can also use fusion attacks, using either large objects, fire and ice, or the freaking moon. As the Composer (his older form), he has the power to bring people back to life and to change forms (both into a teenager and a little ball of light). In both forms he can also ‘scan’ people, or read their current thoughts. Since many people (lower in rank) in the series can, it is assumed he also has wings and a noise form, but neither of these are confirmed.

His cellphone has its own abilities. It can take pictures of the past, imprint ‘memes’ on to people (force a word into their head), and track people’s power.

Writing sample:
Today, Joshua had decided to take a stroll around the streets of Shibuya. These was odd for a variety of reasons. One, Joshua did not stroll. He wasn’t terribly fond of physical activity except under some very specific circumstances, and him taking walks around a crowded city wasn’t exactly common. Two, he wasn’t the type to procrastinate. He usually just got his work done, and that was that. Right now, however, he frankly just didn’t feel like it.

Three, and possibly the most distinct oddity, was that said walk was in the RG.

It was rare that the Composer ventured outside of his direct domain. There were many reasons behind that- younger form, more limited powers (slightly, but still limited), having to deal with the hassel of the living. Mostly, however, it was because there wasn’t much of a connection there. The dead and the living- there was a fairly obvious line, and Joshua just smirked knowingly as people ran through the crossing, jabbering on their phones as if that was the most important thing in their lives, with no idea of the Game under their noses.

So that left an obvious question- why? He could make excuses all he wanted, but Joshua knew the real reason. Nostalgia wasn’t something he liked to admit to, especially with his own ‘life’ being so far behind him. But that life wasn’t the reason today.

He passed by the statue of Hachiko, watching from a distance and hidden well in the crowd as a group of teenagers (plus one younger girl) met up. One was Joshua’s main interest, the headphoned boy rushing towards the already assembled group, bending over to catch his breathe before smiling up at his friends. Neku had ‘thought’ quite clearly at him that he’d wanted to see Joshua, and that his former partner didn’t have to completely vanish from his life.

Well, it was a good thing Joshua had never really intended to leave him alone, then.

Voice sample: Here. Still going, but I think it’s got enough to show how I play him.

(Also, sorry, forgot a subject line the first time. :|;)

I'm not completely abandoning the application, but I have decided to withdraw for the moment. Not that there's anything wrong with having clarifications - I do have your answers! It may just take more than a week to get them all into something tangible.

Once I do have things sorted out, I'll be more than happy to try again! Thank you for the consideration. ♥

REVISION REQUEST- Hope this isn't too late! Busy weekend :O)

[personal profile] not_a_clotpole 2012-05-08 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Personal History - from Season 1 to Season 4, Ep 6: When we first meet Arthur Pendragon in episode one he appears to be the epitome of a spoiled brat with little regard for his servants or anyone 'underneath' him. In fact he bullies not only his own servant, but a stranger (Merlin) who has just arrived in Camelot. It is apparent that Arthur holds himself and his fellow knights in very high regard, but not anyone else.

Or so it seems, as the first series unfolds Arthur proves to be more fair minded then he first appeared. For example, in episode two he is prepared to take Merlin's word that a fellow knight is cheating, despite the fact that Merlin is only a servant. He is also shown to deeply care for the people of Camelot (who he will one day rule), when he brings a curse on the land of Camelot by killing a unicorn, he is more than willing to lay down his own life to break the curse. He is also more than willing to accept those who are good fighters to be knights, even if they aren't noble, such as in the case of Lancelot.

While always honourable (most of the time!) Arthur also becomes more aware of servants and regular townsfolk through not just the influence of Merlin, but of Guinevere, Morgana's maidservant. While Arthur has known of Gwen for many years prior to the series, it is only during Season One that they get to know each other, starting with Arthur willing to defy his father's orders to find an antidote to save Merlin.

Later when Gwen's father is killed trying to escape from a treason sentence, Arthur makes sure that she can remain in her home. The two continue to grow closer, when Arthur almost dies at the end of Season One, Guinevere nurses him and at the start of Season Two Arthur imposes on her hospitality to he can go incognito to the Jousting Tournament. While he proves to be a rather poor house guest, most of that is due to ignorance and when he realises the error of his ways, thanks to a good talking to from Gwen, he does his best to make amends. In doing so, the two start to fall in love, with changes Arthur's preceptions even more.

Arthur's growth throughout the series is tempered by his father's influence and his desire to make him proud. While, Arthur's tendency is to be far more moderate especially when it comes to magic users, he is often tempted to overlook his own feelings on these matters.

One of Arthur's earlier influences to follow his own heart is Morgana, his father's ward. The two have grown up together and in the first two seasons Morgana often challenges Arthur and encourages him to defy his father. However, at the end of Season Two Morgana meets her half-sister Morgause and becomes an unwitting pawn in the latter's attempt to kill the King. Morgause is thwarted by Merlin who poisons Morgana in order to stop Morgause. Arthur is left unaware of this and spends the next year searching for Morgana, believing her kidnapped. Morgana is eventually found, but unbeknown to Arthur has changed and become consumed with hatred for Uther's war against sorcery and willing to do anything to overthrow the King, no matter who gets in the way. As Morgana grows more distance, Arthur spends more time with Guinevere.

In fact in Season Three, Arthur is willing to give up his position as Crown Prince and heir (at least temporarily) to protect Guinevere. However, it is clear throughout this season that Arthur wants to do the right thing for the people of Camelot and this becomes all important at the end of Season when Morgana (who he discovers is actually his half-sister) and Morgause take over the kingdom. With his ability to accept non-nobility as equals, Arthur forms a small band of knights and with Merlin's help succeeds in taking back the castle.

Season Four finds Arthur in the position of Regent, King Uther having been left devastated by Morgana's betrayal. Arthur yet again proves uncertain of himself, putting much of his trust in his Uncle Agravaine. This uncertainty and desire to please family leads to much disaster in Camelot, including Uther's death and Morgana taking over Camelot yet again. In the year between the end of Season Three and Four though it is clear there have been changes in Camelot that reflect Arthur's views, such as the non-noble knights been elevated to positions of great importance. Also during an attack from spirits released from the Otherworld, Arthur opens the city to all comers to keep them safe, despite the strain it puts on resources.

Despite Agravaine's attempts to steer Arthur astray, going so far as to prompt a war between Camelot and the neighbouring Kingdom Caerleon, Arthur eventually does what he thinks is right and offers peace and one on one combat, avoiding the war and great bloodshed.

As King, Arthur is struggling to find his way and hopefully will listen to the advice of those who genuinely care for him. But the pull of family is strong.

Background:
The PMMM wiki can leave some things to be desired sometimes... let me know if you need anything more than this!

Changes from canon, if AU: n/a

Personality:
Sayaka is a lively and energetic girl, who is usually upbeat and positive for the most part. She is outspoken and unafraid to stand up for herself or her friends, and perhaps because of these qualities, its easy for her to conflict with those that oppose her. She does not back down from a challenge and rises to the occasion no matter what sort of odds are stacked against her. She is not the sort to just 'give up' or 'give in' and seems to possess incredible strength of will when it comes down to it. Her friends are extremely important to her and she is willing to go to just about any lengths to see them happy. In her tight knit group of friends, she seems to have happily taken on the role of the joker or goofball, often teasing Hitomi and Madoka as her way of showing them affection.

She is kind, courageous and willing to work hard for the sake of others, but when described by Homura, "her kindness makes her ignorant, her courage makes her careless, and she'll get no return on her hard work for others." Sayaka unfortunately seems to learn all of this the hard way as her world steadily comes crashing down around her. However, with her unyielding personality, she refuses to see things in this light, and instead puts all of her focus on her ideals, drowning out any nay-sayers that may disagree with the choices she has made. She is stubborn to the point of it being dangerous for her, and can be almost blinded by what she thinks is 'the way things should be.' She has an almost overwhelming sense of justice and 'doing the right thing' which are the exact elements that seem to get her into the most trouble...

Sayaka does not ask for help, and even goes so far as to refuse it outright. When something is bothering her, she does her best to keep it to herself, however those close to her seem to be able to see right through her façade. She is not exactly the brightest or a model student, and is often seen dozing off in class than anything else. Her grades aren't exactly stellar either, but these things don't seem to bother her too much. She isn't stupid, but she certainly doesn't seem to apply herself. She is certainly not ignorant, and when presented with the possibilty of making her own wish; she comments how there are others in the world that deserve the chance much more than they do, and that they most likely can't decide on something for themselves because they have yet to experience a great tragedy in their lives.

One of Sayaka's greatest secrets is of course her relationship with Kyousuke Kamijo, her childhood friend and the violinist prodigy. With him hospitalized after a terrible accident that leaves him unable to play -- Sayaka shows her dedication by visiting him often, and trying to bring him gifts to cheer him up. Although he most likely doesn't know her feelings, since she keeps quiet about these things, it seems to be enough for her to just simply spend time with him -- even when he lashes out at her in his despair. Despite his hurtful words, Sayaka does her best to try to encourage him, insiting that he not give up... since magic and miracles both exist.

Abilities:
After making a contract with Kyuubey to become a "mahou shoujo" Sayaka gains the ability to transform into a magical girl. In exchange for becoming a puella magi and dedicating onself to defeating witches, Sayaka is given the opportunity to make a single wish come true. The price that comes of it is the "Soul Gem." Later on, this is revealed to be an actual manifestation of the girls' souls. Kyuubey reveals that they are able to live through nearly impossible situations and injuries that would normally be fatal -- as long as the Soul Gem remains intact. Unfortunately, one of the many drawbacks of this is that since the gem does contain her living essence... the girls are not able to be separated from the Soul Gem for more than 100m, or they will lose control of their bodies, and essentially -- die unless reuinted.

The Soul Gem itself takes the form of a ring in her normal everyday wear, a decorative egg-like charm in its true form, and as a gem (which, for Sayaka rests on her navel) in her magical girl form.

When transformed, Sayaka uses multiple swords to attack her targets. The seem to appear out of no where and she can create many at once, though she tends to keep one in hand at a time, she has been seen to use the others as projectiles as well, lauching them at a distant enemy. As her wish was based on a healing prayer, she has also gained hightened self-healing abilities, as well as great endurance. In battle, when these skills are activated, she can block out all forms of pain almost entirely, making her a nearly unstoppable berserker.

Writing sample:
There wasn't anytime to think about it. No chance to be scared, no opportunity to second guess herself... Madoka was in danger, and if she didn't do anything -- she was about to lose two of the most important people in her life. With blazing speed, she dove into the witch's barrier, sword first. She couldn't believe how quick she could move -- how light she felt with each strike. Shing, shing, shing the familiars scattered, some of them cut to pieces as she swooped down to free her friend from their grasp. She was so lost in the moment, she barely heard the exclamation of her friend in the background, calling her name.

She couldn't let it break her concentration. Another swarm of familiars were just up ahead. Drawing another sword seemingly from nowhere, she looked down at them, a feeling of determination fueling her now as she shot forward again, slicing them to pieces with only a few swings.

It was then that the witch finally came into view. The monitor with the pigtails -- that just had to be it! Leaping forward in its direction, Sayaka charged forward with a shoulder, bodychecking the fiend and sending it reeling into the wide open space of the barrier. "This is my finishing blow!!" she announced with confidence, brandishing her weapon and aiming it straight for the creature. The hit connected, sending both of them speeding towards the ground, where they crashed; mysterious fluid gushing from the creature as it made impact.

The barrier around them faded into obscurity... its conjurer now defeated. With her hands behind her head, Sayaka turned to face her friend with a smile. "Ah, my bad, my bad... I almost missed it! Aheh..."

[Alternate Timelines]

Changes from canon, if AU: N/A. It should be noted, however, that Homura's full history involves a lot of AU timelines, since each time she rewinds time will create a new alternate universe which she will also live through until rewinding it again. Since this process is why she's become so powerful (and why Madoka gains enough power to save or destroy the world), it's heavily implied she's done this innumerable times, though flashbacks only show us highlights of a few. She is determined to continue it until she can save Madoka.

Personality:

Homura is a new student who seems to be great at everything, an instant hit among her new classmates for her abilities in sports and her uncanny way of seeming to be in control of every situation, as well as solving even advanced math problems with ease. She is mysterious and aloof, and always composed. Although it's her first day, she seems to know everything about the school and her classmates; she must be very diligent.

Behind this everyday life, Homura reveals a harsh temperament, still wrapped in mystery. She confronts those who might be able to become magical girls very strongly, giving them veiled warnings and acting in ways they simply don't understand. She refuses to work together, or to answer most of their direct questions, and claims magical girls are beyond saving. She is willing to be brutal to achieve whatever her true objective might be, always responding with the hint of a threat if the others act against her hints. She does not always explain her desires well.

This is because she's tried before. Much of Homura's coldness comes from frustration and has been forced on her by her situation, as it becomes clear being a magical girl is indeed a dire fate in this world. When she has tried to warn people clearly before now, she's been disbelieved or ignored. Hints guiding them the right way without explaining things they can't accept might work better. She also admits that she may be this way because she no longer sees herself as human; given that magical girls have quite literally had their soul taken out of them, she means this literally and likely houses regret over what she's had to do, though it's understood as metaphor the first time she refers to it (and she considers the price worthwhile if it saves Madoka).

The rest of the coldness comes from trauma. Over and over again, Homura has lived these same events, from the friendships that break down over competition to the deaths of her comrades and most important person, to watching that same person destroy the very world. She has experienced things that would affect anyone, and experienced them countless times, trapped in this cycle by her own determination.

Despite this, Homura is not entirely without compassion. When the other girls are truly in danger, she is often willing to help or save them- especially if it means avoiding allowing them to contract as magical girls as well (or if Madoka asks for it). When facing something above their abilities, she tries to warn them off and will offer to face the danger herself, knowing her much-longer experience as a magical girl makes her more likely to survive. She is even the first to suggest teaming up when a battle too difficult for herself (or anyone else) alone arises. However, she considers a seemingly unfeeling magical girl to be better suited for the system of their world, not out of cruelty but because their outlook will better cope with the harsh realities along the way.

After all, she wasn't able to.

Homura was very different in the past. The former Homura is a very shy and quiet girl with glasses, who finds it difficult to be the new transfer student and to make new friends. In addition, she is not very physically strong or resilient, and feels very useless. She has a heart condition. When one of her new classmates, Madoka, is kind to her and helps her orient herself in the new school (and takes her to the nurse to get her away from the nerve-wracking crowd of students), she becomes attached to Madoka very quickly. When Madoka - already a magical girl in this timeline - helps to save her from a witch, it's solidified. Madoka is her only friend and the most important thing to her. This later develops into the main timeline Homura admitting freely that she only cares for Madoka and will only act in ways that will protect her. It is also the way Homura staves off the despair that would otherwise turn her into a witch herself: she has this absolute determination and focus instead.

Actually, it simply cannot be overstated how much everything about Homura is connected to Madoka. Even their names have ties to each other in differing readings and scripts, and in crucial scenes between the main timeline and former timelines, they often reverse roles, with the shy transfer Homura being led by the confident Madoka turning into the composed Homura leading the shy Madoka who confesses her feelings of uselessness, for example. Homura is the one who will be with Madoka from the beginning to the very end in the main timeline, even becoming the only one to fully remember Madoka and the timeline events after Madoka has changed the world's system.

As her main power is the ability to rewind time, Homura redoes the timeline again and again. Along the way, she changes through the countless battles she experiences but most of all, she makes a conscious effort to completely change when she decides it will be the best way to save Madoka. This is what results in the cool, aloof, and sometimes cruel Homura of the main timeline, changed more and more until she herself worries she may be driving Madoka away from her instead by having become so different. (Ironic- and fitting in a world where magical girls never quite have their wishes go right.) She uses her magic to heal her eyesight and body, and puts her time to use training. This adds to her mysterious allure, as it's this endless experience that gives her so much knowledge and so much practice to perform so well in everything.

Once this is finally over, Homura finds more of a middle ground. She is still calm and collected and capable, but less harsh and seems much more relaxed, perhaps because of finally being able to let go of all those struggles and worries.

Abilities:

Rewinding Time: Magical girls' powers come from their wishes. Since Homura wanted to protect Madoka at all costs, she gained the power to go back in time to do it all over again, until Madoka was finally able to be saved. This ability may also be at use in a smaller way when Homura appears to move so fast in battle. She also has the capability of stopping time, though anyone touching her will still move freely as she does (though time will stop for them as well if they let go of her).

General Magic: The puella magi powers don't seem to be limited to their attacks. When she decides to change herself, one of Homura's first acts is to repair her eyesight with her magic. Other puella magi have been seen creating bindings to trap someone, healing, strengthening normal weapons, and the like. It's also notable that Homura, thanks to so many battles over so long, has become quite powerful. This means she would also make a very powerful witch if she fell into despair.

Weapons: Homura uses a broad array of firearms, ranging from a beretta to grenades (flashbangs and stun grenades), hanguns, assault rifles, machine guns, pipe bombs (assembled from plans on the internet), anti-tank missiles... Most significantly, once Madoka has changed the world order, Homura begins to use a bow- Madoka's chosen weapon.

Shield: Homura wears a shield on her arm which contains her actual time-rewinding device. By the time she has her bow, she no longer uses this, likely because its purpose for her wish has already been fulfilled once the system is broken.

Soul Gem: Exactly what it says on the tin. This is a small, egg-shaped gem that quite literally contains Homura's soul. It is the source of her magic, provides her with a body strong enough to stand up to witches and their attacks, and if she's ever too far away from it, she will simply collapse as a corpse; she is already dead after having had her soul taken out and put into the gem in the first place.

Telepathy Homura is highly unlikely to ever use it, as she wouldn't want to let Kyuubey into her mind, but the magical girls can communicate via telepathy if Kyuubey passes their thoughts to each other. She would likely have the ability to do this as well, especially as one scene with Kyoko calling out Sayaka via telepathy doesn't necessarily involve Kyuubey anyway.

Writing sample:

Time and again, it was the same nightmare, as if she had to relive it at night as many times as she'd lived it in the day. Maybe more.

It always started with the fog, the dimensional twisting of a witch's barrier in a battle she couldn't win, and Madoka. It never ended well.

Her throat never worked in these dreams. Shout and shout as she may, the words just couldn't reach Madoka, not even the single, screamed. no! Instead, she was left to wonder why they'd ended up so far apart, unable to even make their feelings reach each other.

Kyuubey was there, always, the little white creature practically purring in anticipation of what came next. Madoka would fall, generating an enormous amount of power for his race and their plans.

And Homura would wake up screaming. Only this time, she didn't. This time, there were more people than she remembered. This time, she didn't know what sort of timeline had been produced to bring these unconnected strangers here. Even Kyuubey, to someone as practiced at reading his reactions as she was, seemed confused.

This time, the bindings disappeared, and so did the whole scene, leaving them standing in a simple field. Calmly, she stepped closer to the (intruder? foe? victim?) arrival, and paused before speaking.

"If you understand what's good for you, you'll leave this barrier at once. If you don't hurry, you'll become lost here."
