WHAT TO KNOW |
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to. Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful. In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character. The application page from the former site can be found here. |

MISC. RULES |
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other. Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request. There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying. If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite. If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor. Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans. |

APPLICATION IN DETAIL |
Your name: Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference. Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted. Other characters played at Passing: Character name: Character fandom: Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options. Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from. Importing development from old game? If yes, where from? Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously. In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves. Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different. Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon. Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice. Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section. Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character. Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed. Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or ![]() Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread. These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly. |

Arthur Pendragon | BBC Merlin
Your journal:
Contact: psion_x@yahoo.com.au
Other characters played at Passing: N/A - I used to play Arthur here, but I didn't make the activity check one months and then I got superbusy...etc etc...
Character name: Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot
Character fandom: BBC's Merlin
Version: V1,
Canon point: Season 4, Ep 6 Arthur will be living through the rest of the episodes in the series and beyond!
Importing development from old game? His previous interactions in OPN.
Background: http://merlin.wikia.com/wiki/Arthur_Pendragon
Personality:
On the surface Arthur can be summed up in one word, 'Clotpole', he is brash, over-confident and rude. He is supremely certain of his own abilities when it comes to fighting and woe to anyone who suggests he might not be able to defeat or hold his own against someone or something.
Due to his high status in Camelot, first as the Crown Prince and heir to the throne and now as King, few people get to know anything more about Arthur, but underneath his facade he is rather insecure. His father, King Uther put an enormous amount of pressure on him and the relationship between father and son was strained. Arthur isn't very good at interpersonal relationships, becoming flustered and awkward, especially when challenged. He has trouble explaining his feelings and expressing them.
Arthur enjoys everything to do with being a knight, he is their leader and participates in training with great enthusiasm and often picks on others weaknesses in the area of combat if he feels their skills aren't up to standard.
Arthur is used to getting his way and is very stubborn, if not childish when denied or difficulties are put in his path.
Abilities: Arthur in his own words 'has been trained to kill since birth', although that's an exaggeration he's definitely highly skilled in all forms of medieval combat, particularly sword fighting. He's very good at thinking on his feet and coming up with defence or offensive strategies.
Writing sample: The shafts of sunlight pouring into the council chambers seemed to barely move even as it felt like hours were passing.
Arthur, sitting at the head of the Council table was trying not to show his boredom too much...just a little bit, in the vain hope it would get Monmouth, who was currently flapping his lips, to sum up...whatever it was he was going on about and let this torture come to an end.
It wasn't happening, not even when Sir Leon actually let a yawn slip out. Arthur gave his right hand mind the briefest smile before resting his chin in his hand and rolling his eyes. Not for the first time he wondered how Father had put up with this, no wonder he was in such a bad mood all the time.
Thinking about the King brings Arthur up short, for months King Uther had been all but confined to his room, hardly speaking save for a few sentences here and there, his mind seemed irreparably damaged at his daughter's betrayal.
Arthur unconsciously taps his fingers on the table, thinking and worrying. Sometimes it felt almost like an insult, Morgana had betrayed Father, had betrayed all of them that was true. But Arthur was still here and always would be, wasn't that enough? Couldn't Father pull himself together for the sake of his kingdom and his people?
Voice sample:
Regular voice sample:
Thank God for training that's all I can say. If my life was nothing but councils and treaty negotiations and reading roll after roll of parchment I'd be mad, completely and utterly mad.
I probably shouldn't write something like that, with Father being the way he is. I visited him today, hoping to get something out of him, Gaius says he talks sometimes, but he didn't say a word to me. He was walking around though, looking for something or someone maybe? I'm pretty sure he didn't even know I was there. I went to Gaius afterwards and asked him exactly what Father says when he speaks...Gaius was evasive, but I finally got out of him that it's mostly about Morgana.
Morgana! I still can't - it's too - what was she thinking? I don't know if I can ever forgive her, or even if I should. She enslaved the town with an undead army for God sake! Of course, that could have been Morgause. It probably was Morgause, that sneaky, underhanded, vile...Why Morgana would follow her...she's enchanted, that's all I can come up with.
-
Damn it that was Merlin, knocking my elbow. Honestly, how he manages to walk around without ending up flat on his face is a mystery to me. I've never seen anyone so clumsy, it's embarrassing to know him sometimes.
He does know that I like to have fruit before bed though...he's just put a bowl of cherries and strawberries and oranges in front of me. I suppose I can forgive him then, for just barging on in. Or I will, once he tells me how Guinevere is going, I haven’t seen her all day.
Voice sample:
Regular voice sample:
“Come on, Merlin, how many times have we done this?” [The Crown Prince of Camelot waits impatiently for his
friendservant to catch up with him. The knights of Camelot stand before him though and he decides he might as well begin making his speech, especially since Merlin seems to have tripped over and sent his helmet rolling away.]“All right, let’s begin,” [he directs a stern look at Sir Gwaine before continuing.] “I’m not going to lie to any of you, the next few days are going to be difficult and dangerous. Now most of you have had the pleasure of having to fend off an attack by a magical beast.” [This statement is received by chuckles and shaking heads.] “But remember you can’t ever overestimate the danger a beast like this poses, especially one like this, that has someone behind it, pulling the strings.” [Arthur pauses briefly, thinking about that likely ‘someone’, then he shakes his head.] “For Camelot!”
“For Camelot!” [His knights cry and salute.
Finally Merlin arrives helmet and cape in arms.] “Oh good, I was starting to think I was going to have to go in there without head protection.”
[Merlin, of course, has a smart remark to make to that, but then Arthur walked into that one.] “You know, you could stand to be a bit more creative, God forbid I have a boring servant. Now, look since you’re staying here -” [He gives Merlin a very stern look.]
REVISION REQUEST
REVISION REQUEST- Hope this isn't too late! Busy weekend :O)
Or so it seems, as the first series unfolds Arthur proves to be more fair minded then he first appeared. For example, in episode two he is prepared to take Merlin's word that a fellow knight is cheating, despite the fact that Merlin is only a servant. He is also shown to deeply care for the people of Camelot (who he will one day rule), when he brings a curse on the land of Camelot by killing a unicorn, he is more than willing to lay down his own life to break the curse. He is also more than willing to accept those who are good fighters to be knights, even if they aren't noble, such as in the case of Lancelot.
While always honourable (most of the time!) Arthur also becomes more aware of servants and regular townsfolk through not just the influence of Merlin, but of Guinevere, Morgana's maidservant. While Arthur has known of Gwen for many years prior to the series, it is only during Season One that they get to know each other, starting with Arthur willing to defy his father's orders to find an antidote to save Merlin.
Later when Gwen's father is killed trying to escape from a treason sentence, Arthur makes sure that she can remain in her home. The two continue to grow closer, when Arthur almost dies at the end of Season One, Guinevere nurses him and at the start of Season Two Arthur imposes on her hospitality to he can go incognito to the Jousting Tournament. While he proves to be a rather poor house guest, most of that is due to ignorance and when he realises the error of his ways, thanks to a good talking to from Gwen, he does his best to make amends. In doing so, the two start to fall in love, with changes Arthur's preceptions even more.
Arthur's growth throughout the series is tempered by his father's influence and his desire to make him proud. While, Arthur's tendency is to be far more moderate especially when it comes to magic users, he is often tempted to overlook his own feelings on these matters.
One of Arthur's earlier influences to follow his own heart is Morgana, his father's ward. The two have grown up together and in the first two seasons Morgana often challenges Arthur and encourages him to defy his father. However, at the end of Season Two Morgana meets her half-sister Morgause and becomes an unwitting pawn in the latter's attempt to kill the King. Morgause is thwarted by Merlin who poisons Morgana in order to stop Morgause. Arthur is left unaware of this and spends the next year searching for Morgana, believing her kidnapped. Morgana is eventually found, but unbeknown to Arthur has changed and become consumed with hatred for Uther's war against sorcery and willing to do anything to overthrow the King, no matter who gets in the way. As Morgana grows more distance, Arthur spends more time with Guinevere.
In fact in Season Three, Arthur is willing to give up his position as Crown Prince and heir (at least temporarily) to protect Guinevere. However, it is clear throughout this season that Arthur wants to do the right thing for the people of Camelot and this becomes all important at the end of Season when Morgana (who he discovers is actually his half-sister) and Morgause take over the kingdom. With his ability to accept non-nobility as equals, Arthur forms a small band of knights and with Merlin's help succeeds in taking back the castle.
Season Four finds Arthur in the position of Regent, King Uther having been left devastated by Morgana's betrayal. Arthur yet again proves uncertain of himself, putting much of his trust in his Uncle Agravaine. This uncertainty and desire to please family leads to much disaster in Camelot, including Uther's death and Morgana taking over Camelot yet again. In the year between the end of Season Three and Four though it is clear there have been changes in Camelot that reflect Arthur's views, such as the non-noble knights been elevated to positions of great importance. Also during an attack from spirits released from the Otherworld, Arthur opens the city to all comers to keep them safe, despite the strain it puts on resources.
Despite Agravaine's attempts to steer Arthur astray, going so far as to prompt a war between Camelot and the neighbouring Kingdom Caerleon, Arthur eventually does what he thinks is right and offers peace and one on one combat, avoiding the war and great bloodshed.
As King, Arthur is struggling to find his way and hopefully will listen to the advice of those who genuinely care for him. But the pull of family is strong.
