WHAT TO KNOW
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to.

Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful.

In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character.

The application page from the former site can be found here.

MISC. RULES
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other.

Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request.

There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying.

If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite.

If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor.

Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans.

APPLICATION IN DETAIL
Your name:
Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference.
Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted.
Other characters played at Passing:

Character name:
Character fandom:
Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options.
Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from.
Importing development from old game? If yes, where from?
Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously.

In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves.

Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different.

Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon.

Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice.

Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section.

Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character.

Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed.

Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or [community profile] dear_mun are all fine.

Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread.

These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly.

Version: v1
Canon point: Post-Act 38, working at Karaoke Crown as a human.
Importing development from old game? n/a
Background: [Nephrite] [PGSM Summary] [Episode Summaries]

Changes from canon, if AU: n/a

Personality: The phrase "all brawn and no brain" is something that a lot of people would probably apply to Nephrite. He is rude, brash, and loud, and he relies less on tactic and wit and more on brute strength to achieve his goals. Even his plots to find the ginzuishou and the princess are rather simplistic and tend to involve using youma to flush them out. The fact that he is also prone to violent outbursts when agitated or something isn't going his way doesn't likely help the image either. In many ways, he is severely lacking in self-control. His temper, after all, is one of his most poignant traits.

While it doesn't excuse his violence or anger, at his core, Nephrite only wants to be accepted, to please someone, to be shown compassion. From the start, nothing appears to go right for him. He fails constantly, the other Shitennou mock him, and he can't seem to gain Beryl's favor in spite of his dogged efforts. To add insult to injury, he was unable to regain memories of his past life. A deep-rooted insecurity has settled in from a combination of these things. He will hold his head up high and sneer in contempt while he brags about his superiority and ability. In fact, he is an extremely prideful man-- but the arrogance he displays is all an act. Whenever he begins to break, he only knows to lash out and retaliate-- to guard what's left of his bruised ego with violent outbursts. After all, you can't show weakness if you're too busy pummeling someone's face in, right? Yet, left alone, he will be more likely to find a corner and mope in it. The jabs at his worth have taken their tolls and he's not beyond feeling sorry for himself and falling into a depressed state. He will brood, whine, and deprecate himself in the absence of others, having snapped over things like a Senshi taking pity on him and being stuck as a human.

Once - or if - you get past his impetuous traits, Nephrite's loyalty shines. He is berated and spat on and still his loyalty remains. Even without his memories of the past life, he holds his duty and honor as a Shitennou in high regard. While at first this means kissing the ground that Beryl walks on, he later comes to gravitate towards Mamoru's compassion. It's thanks to that aforementioned compassion that he even starts to later function as a normal human being and mellow out. On another note, the kindness shown to him by Dark Mercury and later her healed civilian self makes him obsessed with trying to repay her. A little bit of compassion seems to go a long ways with Nephrite, even if he's terrible at showing it.

Having known nothing outside of the Dark Kingdom, it's no question that he is socially awkward as a human. He has no idea how to function in the real world and struggles constantly with the idea. Even with Motoki, who was kind enough to give him a job (and a shoulder to lean on!), he yells and screams and breaks things out of frustration. ...And as a human, he is also quite clumsy and is often seen tripping and stumbling over things-- yet another source of aggravation for him.

Abilities:
▪ [STRENGTH]; Of the four Shitennou, Nephrite is the one associated with physical strength and he has a lot of it. He's seen lifting someone up over his head and throwing them, for example. As a result, it's no surprise that he's good with and prefers hand-to-hand combat.

▪ [SWORDSMAN]; Like the other generals, he can summon a personal weapon to hand. Nephrite's is a longsword, although he was seen using a buzzsaw-type weapon on Dark Mercury once.

▪ [SPECIAL POWERS]; He is capable of firing off energy blasts, controlling youma, and teleporting (with a dramatic whip of his cape!). Additionally, he seems capable of some basic magic, as all Shitennou seem capable of it-- such as putting people to sleep or sealing doors.

Obviously as a human, he is not capable of these things, but he'll still dream that he is while he's dreaming he's a Shitennou!

Writing sample: (taken from my Obi-Wan Kenobi app for Vatheon!)

One thing was for certain: Obi-Wan had hardly expected to wake up drenched. Both he and Anakin had endured injuries from Dooku, though his Padawan's were far worse than his own. All his own had really required were a visit to a healer in the Temple and sleep... And he had been on his way to do the latter, blacking out almost as soon as he'd stepped foot into his quarters. When he awoke, his senses were ringing out alarms every which way, telling him this was most certainly not the Temple and he was very, very wet. Neither of which made sense to him. His mind jumped to the possibility that someone had attacked him and tried to do away with him. They were on the brink of war-- the Clone Wars. And yet, something about that conclusion didn't feel right. He didn't dismiss the thought, but he fully intended to investigate.

He climbed to his feet, checking his utility belt and tunic first. Most importantly, his lightsaber was still clipped to his belt. Either this was something else entirely or his attacker was very sloppy. After checking his belongings thoroughly, he concluded that nothing was missing, but he did note a small, blue, shimmering creature floating around him.

"Well, hello," he remarked, tilting his head as if that would help him figure out its reason for fluttering about.

It said nothing and when he reached out, it flitted away from his hand quickly... and followed him wherever he went. Odd, but he left it alone. He had far more pressing things to be worrying about.

"Now where in the blazes am I?" he mused aloud, half-hopeful that a voice would spontaneously appear and tell him. No such thing, of course. That would just be too easy. He sighed and carefully scanned his surroundings, picking out the closest person he could find. He pretended to be aimless and lost and-- well, really, he didn't have to pretend much.

"Pardon me. Can you tell me where I am?"

And the native told him-- very cheerfully, in fact. If he weren't already suspicious, Obi-Wan might have found that endearing, given how rude some people could be. "I'm sorry... Vatheon? I've never heard of it. Can you tell me more?" he prompted gently.

"Certainly!" they said with the forever chipper attitude, and went on to explain that he was in an underwater city and about this deity or something called Lamufao (and he'd never heard of that either!) and... that he was evidently stuck here.

While Obi-Wan couldn't help but look alarmed, he kept the frustration out of his face and voice. "Please understand: there is a war going on and I cannot stay here. I am needed elsewhere," he insisted sternly. But then the native did the most curious (and infuriating!) thing. They smiled pleasantly, told him to enjoy his stay and meandered off. "What?" he spat incredulously.

How outrageous! What sort of a place was this? Certainly nothing that could be considered legal by the Republic! He struggled not to let his frustration grab hold of him. There was nothing to shrug off about being in a galaxy-wide war! Oh, this was just ridiculous. Fuming, Obi-Wan weaved through the streets, asking both the same and new questions to as many people as he could, only to keep getting the same answers. By the time it sunk in that he truly wasn't getting out of here, Obi-Wan was exhausted and still angry. Would Anakin be all right without him? He was clever and his heart was always in the right place, but he still worried for his recklessness. Such a trait had no place in war. Then he fumed some more over this feeling of helplessness. No doubt the other Jedi and the Clone Army could handle things, but it hardly felt right not being able to do anything to help them either.

And yet they expected him to enjoy his stay here? Obi-Wan scowled and took a seat on the nearest bench, staring with scrutiny at the building across from him. He was good at making the best of things, but this really was something else entirely.

Personality:

I know that several people talk and play Harry like he's 'emo.' I have never once gotten this impression and have read all the books. I won't deny that there have been times where I thought 'lol, what an emo kid' in response to some of the things that Harry said or thought but as a whole he's pretty upbeat considering all the crap he's been through. It should be noted at this point that I take Harry from the fifth book of the series and will not be using any part of book's six and seven as references as, obviously, they have not happened yet in Harry's life.

I think that one of the most crucial pieces of Harry's character is often either ignored or blatantly disregarded. That vital part of his personality being that Harry Potter is a child. A child that has had this great, fantastic role shoved on him so quickly that he doesn't really know how to react. For ten years he had no idea the wizarding world even existed and on top of that suffered from hideous acts of child abuse. He was under fed, beat on by his cousin, and treated like worst child in the world, not to mention that if he made any kind of mention of something to do with magic or just beyond the normal he would be placing himself in trouble.

And then, after Hagrid finally catches up with the young wizard, Harry learns the truth about what happened to his parents and the truth about his scar. He learns about being famous and that he lived through a curse that destroyed Voldemort's body and destroyed his house. This is actually, most likely where his hero complex starts to form. Upon being reunited with the wizarding world after ten years he meets several admirers and shakes hands with-I believe the book says everyone in the leaky cauldron-except for Professor Quirrel, obviously. But, understandably, Harry is still apprehensive, everything still feels surreal to him and he still knows next to nothing about the world that's been hidden from him for so long. Part of him likely welcomed the idea of being so well known and having people regard him as a hero. He later gets sick of all the staring and mutters and finds it, frankly, annoying when after introducing himself to someone they immediately look up at his scar.

His hero complex builds a little more when he gets his wand and Mr. Olivander tells him the his wand's brother belonged to Lord Voldemort and that great things could be expected of Harry. Something he's not all that sure on considering how little he knows. When he meets Draco Malfoy for the first time neither has any idea of who the other is and Draco goes on to talk about the Hogwarts Houses- he mentions that he'll probably be in Slytherin and that anything is better than Hufflepuff. Harry doesn't know what the heck Draco is talking about and asks Hagrid about the houses. Upon hearing the general description of Hufflepuff to be 'a lot of duffers' Harry miserably thinks that's probably the house he gets put in seeing as he doesn't yet have a whole lot of confidence in himself.

Even after arriving at Hogwarts everything feels surreal to him, like there's been a mistake and he'll have to go back to the Dursley's. And it's only understandable seeing as he came from an abusive household that treated him like he was less than dirt. The idea that he's finally away from all that-that he actually has a decent chance at making friends and that people are nice to him is something that has difficulty sinking in.

Everything that happens to young Mr. Potter throughout his first two years at Hogwarts shapes him into who he becomes in the Wizarding world as well as helps him to realize who he really is. So, by the time his third year rolls around he has a much better grasp on where he stands as a person. He's become a person that's willing to lend a hand to those who need it and willing to lay down his own life should he have too. More on the mundane side of school life he quickly learns he has a knack for defense against the dark arts and that he's not so fond of potions. It's in his third year he starts to learn more about his parents and the Maurderers. After learning the truth-the real truth about his God-father Sirius Black, Black invites Harry to come live with him once his name was cleared and he was a free man. Harry is elated by the offer but unfortunately, things don't go according to plan as the real murderer and traitor, Peter Petigrew escapes and flees back to Voldemort. And Harry is faced with a feeling of unfairness and realizes he must return to the Dursley's.

Year three is also the year he learns and masters the Patronus spell. His patronus takes the form of a stag most likely because Harry has never known his parents and yet everyone continues to comment on how he looks just like his father aside from having his mother's eyes. He continues to hear so many great things about his mom and dad and more than anything in the world he wants to meet them, though he knows this isn't possible. Obviously, this isn't a happy thought but it's not 'emo.' He has every right to wonder about his parents and even feel cheated that he never got to know them. He's obviously very proud of his family as he gets quite angry when people say bad things about either his mother or father. What happens to aunt Marge in book three is an excellent example of this as the woman refuse to stop bad mouthing his parents and finally pushed him over the edge.

When he returns to for his Fourth year at Hogwarts things start to change for him as he's still a growing boy and still a kid. He is initially intrigued by the idea of the Triwizard Tournament but he doesn't want to complete simply because he gets enough attention as it is and really doesn't want anymore. By the time year four rolls around he's mostly interested in being a normal teenager-something he knows won't happen because of who he is and his dark past. But he's developed a reputation for being someone that actively seeks out trouble-which he doesn't really, as he says- "I don't go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me." No one really believes him at first when he says he didn't put his name in the goblet of fire. Because of this he soon finds himself feeling isolated and feeling that the whole school, aside from Hermione has turned against him. Most of his fellow schoolmates are suddenly wearing badges bearing the words 'Potter Stinks.' Even his best friend Ron is angry with him and doesn't believe that Harry didn't put his name in the goblet- which I imagine would feel much like a punch to the stomach.

Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts is not kind to him, as we all know the three tasks push him to his limits and this is the year that Lord Voldemort returns and kills Cedric Diggory- someone Harry was on friendly terms with. Once again, I think people forget that Harry is only a child and at fourteen years old he witnesses the man who killed his parents kill a seven teen year old and forces Harry to Duel with him. Harry manages to escape, however he's not out of danger yet as a man he trusted-Mad Eye Moody turns out to be an impostor and threatens to kill him for the dark lord. That is not something a fourteen year old boy should ever have to deal with and yet Harry does.

Going into the summer Holidays, Harry is sent back to the Dursley's to a summer of being virtually cut off from the wizarding world as Daily Prophet refuses to report anything about Voldemort's return and no one will tell Harry anything because it's too dangerous to say too much. Knowing what Voldemort is capable it's only natural that Harry would want to be kept up to date, know what's going on while he's so far away from the world he belongs in. He's, at that point, a fifteen year old boy going through puberty and honestly, probably a bit of PTSD, not to mention anger is part of the five stages of grief. He's angry and he wants answers. Even after getting attacked by dementors and nearly expelled from Hogwarts his answers still aren't answered to his satisfaction. Once he finally does rejoin his best friends he's told very little. He learns about how the Daily prophet has discredited everything he and Dumbledore have said about the return of Voldemort and make Harry out to be a liar and attention seeker. Something that doesn't really effect Harry until he returns to school and the mutters and stares return full force.

To make matters much worse, suddenly Dumbledore won't talk or look at Harry which must be rather painful for the poor boy as Dumbledore is a mentor in his life and to suddenly feel like he's avoiding Harry, after what he went through the previous year is nowhere near a happy feeling. He is understandably angry. He starts to get normal, angst-y teenage thoughts that no one understands and no one will listen. Harry's case is entirely different, however, as it really is a case of people not getting it and no one listening to him. It's frustrating and causes Harry's temper to bubble to a very uncomfortable level and feels like he's so close to losing his temper practically everyday.

Now, the Hero complex. Harry's hero complex, I believe, has been imposed on him. It started when he was Eleven years old and first learned the truth about his past. People treated him like some kind of hero and Harry was determined not to let them down. It first shows it's self when Malfoy takes the remembral and Harry stands up for him. The reason he does is because no one else does and obviously someone needs to stand up to Malfoy. I think this is generally how his hero complex works- he gets it in his head that no one will act. The reason he took off after the sorcerer's stone was because he thought that someone was going to try and steal it-he was right, of course, but it's later revealed that only one that wanted to find the stone and not use it could get it--which basically means that if Harry had stayed in bed Qurriell and Voldemort wouldn't have gotten the stone anyway.

In the Chamber of secrets, Harry and his friends do investigating on their own and after Harry and Ron discover that Hermione solved the mystery of the thing guilty of paralyzing the various victims they run to the staff room to tell everyone what they've found. However, they receive shocking news and end up having to run off to tell Lockhart (the, at the time, defense against the Dark Arts teacher) who intends to leave. They force him to come with them since he's obviously useless and once again, Harry realizes that if he doesn't do something, no one will.

It's a little different in the third book as Ron is attacked by the black dog and neither Harry nor Hermione think before tearing off after Ron. When Harry faces the dementors he fights them because he knows Sirius is innocent and there is no one there to save him. He saves Felour's little sister in the second task in the Goblet of fire because Gabriel's sister is nowhere to be found and he takes it to heart when he hears that part in the lyrics about losing what the mermaids took forever. Harry has a very strong sense of what's morally right and won't stand by while someone if wrongly punished or left in some form of danger. This is part of why he's a Gryffindor, after all. Even if Harry is putting himself in danger, if feels like there's a chance he can save someone, or in some cases, something, he will try.

In the first four books Harry's hero complex is often times rewarded and so, obviously, Harry doesn't think much on it. Especially since he's not out for the fame or glory. In fifth book the world has suddenly turned against him because no one want to admit the truth about Voldemort's return. Fudge comes to some stupid conclusions and Daily Prophet discredits anything Harry had to say about the night Cedric died and print that he's some attention seeking boy and that his stories are all rubbish. It's a new, and unpleasant feeling for Harry to suddenly be regarded as nuts along with all the added stress of, well, going through puberty.

Abilities:

Magic! No, seriously. Harry Potter is about a young wizard that has various misadventures at a school for Witch craft and wizardry known as Hogwarts. However, considering that he's still in school and newly a fifth year at the point I'm taking him from there are a few spells he doesn't know yet as they have yet to be taught. Among this list would Augumenti, and Silencio. He also cannot do intentional wandless magic. He can perform any spells he learned in any other books prior to book five, those being the Patronus, Wingardium Leviosa, locomotor, the stunning spell, and of course, Expelliarmus.

for a complete list of Harry Potter spells check here.

He is an excellent seeker and rather gifted on a broom as his father was. Harry is actually pretty observant as he tends to notice things other people don't-a gold glint against the morning sun for example, or even someone's leg badly bleeding. More on the subjectog Flying though, it's one of Harry's favorite things to do and he absolutely loves his firebolt which serves him well in all those Quidditch games he plays in. Harry's a very brave boy, and trust his instincts and broom enough that he can make some very daring dives and pull up just in time. Quidditch is one thing he really doesn't mind being known for.

Harry can speak Parseltounge. That is to say he can speak with snakes-a very rare thing even in the wizarding world and generally associated with dark magic and dark wizards as it was something Salazar Slytherin could do and later more commonly associated with a gift Voldemort possessed.

Writing sample:

Harry couldn't remember ever being angrier with a teacher. Even Snape had never managed to tick him off as badly as that Umbridge woman did. He could feel his fingernails digging half-moon crescents in his palms as he continued to listen to her obnoxious and slightly poisonous voice. He kept his jaw firmly set and refuse to open it even a tiny bit for fear of cursing the horrible toad into oblivion-no matter how tempting it sounded Harry knew that the results would probably not be very much to his liking. He knew she was looking for any reason to expel him right now and he absolutely refused to give her such an opportunity. When she'd finished talking Harry just nodded mutely and sat back down, trying to think of something pleasant now that he didn't have to stare at her fat face.

Unfortunately, there wasn't really a whole lot that he could think about as being pleasant as lately it had just felt like the world had gone to Hell, and honestly, Harry felt he could make a very convincing argument that it had. He flipped open his book of 'Defensive Magical Theory' and stared blankly at the beginning of chapter two. None of the words even remotely made sense in his head as his eyes were only scanning the page as his mind raced in furious circles in his head. It was getting so bad now that anytime he heard the annoying fake cough 'Hem, hem! Harry was starting to feel an insane amount of anger bubbling over and he had to suppress the urge not to start breaking everything.

Harry was unable to focus on anything the entire lesson and merely resorted to scribbling things down on a piece of parchment. He wouldn't risk writing anything about the woman at the teacher's desk- but it was vaguely therapeutic to just doodle for a while- scribbling in poorly drawn pictures of a snitch and his broom. Eventually, he worked up the courage to nudge Ron and both of them ended up wasting the entire hour playing tic-tac-toe and somehow conveying their anger at the choice of a defense against the dark arts teacher.

Character name: Lily Baskerville (Known as Lily Brode in AU)

Character fandom: Pandora Hearts

Version: V2

Canon point: Right after she has the tattoo of the devil burned into the side of her face.

Importing development from old game? No

Background: Here.

Changes from canon, if AU: Lily Baskerville is seen as a bright little girl in canon-verse, filled with smiles and hope for the new day. This Lily is being taken right from the very core of her abuse, right after she was beaten harshly and pulled into the woods, having the sign of the tattoo burned onto her face and leaving her for dead. This Lily, Lily Brode, is nothing like the Lily we know today. Lily is quiet, afraid to touch and feel people, and less willing to see "hope", since all she's been subject to is mindless abuse.

Personality: Lily could be like any other child one would see on the streets. Playing with her friends with a large smile on her face, passing a bouncy ball back and forth with laughter bursting from her lips every few seconds. A child that was happy, as most children are supposed to be, but this isn't the case. Lily is very introverted and quiet, having learned to keep her mouth shut unless she's being spoken to first. Growing up, Lily was told she was the devil, a disgrace, a disgusting, filthy creature of Satan himself that should be dead.

And so, her personality became very withdrawn. When talking to Lily, she'll often shy away, unwilling to speak to anybody in fears they will drop dead as many people have done before, or that they will hit her, beat her and spit on her, accuse her of working devil magic. She's a very scared little girl, and will often flinch away from people when they reach for her. She barely speaks, barely shows any emotion, because she's been taught to act in this way.

It could be said that Lily is very hard to get close to, what with her careful and scared nature, but in all reality, if you show her a smile, she will near close to you. It'll be hard to get her to open up, seeing as though she's learned everybody and everything she touches dies at her fingertips, but once you smile at her, she will smile back, become more willing to touch and feel, and slowly become a happy girl as she should be. Lily has the potential of being like any other child, seeing that she's just at the age of seven years old! It's easy to manipulate her, as well.

If approaching Lily with malice, she will become fearful and try to run, despite the fact that when she ran back in the village she hails from, she will always be caught. She lacks hope, seeing that she's been told she's burning in Hell no matter what, never gaining entrance to Heaven, but still, like any other human being, she doesn't want to be hurt, doesn't want to feel the beating of fists against her skin, so she runs, clinging onto whatever hope she can grasp.

Over all, she's a very broken and sad little girl who simply wants a friend to hold her, tell her she's not cursed, and allow her to smile as she should be allowed to.

Abilities: She can warp the lives of those around her. It's not really an ability, but if one comes in contact with her, they become sickly, and can possibly even die. She has no control over this, however.

Writing sample: It hurt.

Everything hurt -- and it seemed as though the ache itching under her skin would never go away. Slowly, the small child pulled herself through the dirt and rubble that rubbed at her already bruised skin, wincing as the filth entered the open wounds cut into her skin, a gentle cry escaping her pale, chapped lips. It seemed as though it would never stop, the beating of the fists against her skin, the way their words would make her heart clench and ache inside of her chest, the way she would ache for days and days after the beatings, sometimes not even having the time to heal because they'd simply beat her again before she had a chance to mend the wounds on her skin.

Closing her sore eyes, hot tears ran down her equally bruised face, feeling herself tremble as slowly, small hands raised to wrap around her trembling, frail body, soft gasps escaping her lips. It hurt so badly, and she did nothing wrong. She couldn't control the things that happened around her, she would never wish to hurt those people that had unfortunately, fell victim to her curse and dropped in the blink of an eye. She didn't want her precious mommy and daddy to hate her, she didn't want them to yell, scream, call her the devil.

But they did, as well as the rest did.

Her sobs became more erratic now as she clenched her eyes shut, more tears running down her rounded cheeks as she let her body slump forward, tired and sore as she took a deep breath of air, eyes opening slowly to allow more hot clumps of tears fall to the floor beneath her, bloodied from her knees -- the cuts against her skin burning.

It hurt, and it seemed as though it would never stop.

Voice sample: I don't understand why they hate me.

It hurts a lot... they hurt me everyday. My skin feels like it's going to fall right off of me, like I'm going to be bald. Like the kitty I see walking around the village sometimes. Miss Campbell scared the kitty off, though... I don't see her anymore. Miss Campbell hates kitties, and she hates me, too. Everybody hates me, though. I don't understand. I wish they didn't. It hurts a lot when they tell me I'm going to that place.

When they tell me I'm going to Hell.

I don't understand that place. I don't understand where it is. They say it's underneath the ground, but when I tried to dig to see it, I could only find dry dirt. There was no fire, and there was no devil. So how would I get there? Mommy sometimes tells me she already has a grave for me. I don't understand what a grave is, either. She said there isn't a grave close enough to Hell for me.

I don't understand, but I know it's bad.

They sort of told me what it was. They said it was a place where a demon like me was going. A demon is a thing that comes from Hell. When they first said that, I told them I thought I came from mommy and daddy. They said that they don't know what happened, but I was rotten. Just like the things that come from Hell.

I bleed a lot. I didn't know there was so much blood inside of a person. I bleed on the dirt I sleep in. I wake up sticky and red. I can't wash myself because they don't let me go near the lake. I killed my friend there.

I miss her. She was my only friend.

I killed her. It was an accident. I didn't...

[ Her voice starts to crack and she leans over , her eyes wide as tears star to gush . ]

I miss her.
She smiled.

tifa lockhart | final fantasy vii | two

[personal profile] beatrush 2012-03-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Barmaid by day, eco-terrorist by night, when we first meet Tifa Lockhart at the start of Final Fantasy VII, she's the very picture of youth, optimism, and badassery in the face of Don Corneo-tier odds. Tifa's introduced to the player as a passionate David to the Shin-Ra corporation's Goliath, as well as the childhood friend and girl next door to Cloud Strife. Sensitive and stoic, she's shown to always be there to boost her friends' morale, even when (or rather, especially when) the going gets tough, keeping her own emotions under check all the while. She's good at it, too. All it takes is a hand on an arm and some reassuring, sensible words from Tifa to get Barret to change his mind at the beginning of the game. It's not all soft words and touches with her, though; Tifa can just as easily be tough and quick to retort. This is visible mostly when she's under pressure and gets stern with them, but that does the work, too.

While a well-trained fighter, she's got more than just physical power to back up her resolve. There's her strength of character as well, and confidence in her own strength to boot. Even as a child, she was ready to conquer the perilous heights of Mt. Nibel in just a dress and heels, and kept on going, even when the other boys, who initially went to make sure she didn't get hurt, ran off. That's determination, ladies and gents -- it took falling off a bridge from a mountain to get her to stop, and that too because it knocked her unconscious. Determination aside, this independence is echoed later on down the years when she tells the Shin-Ra trooper keeping her from following Zack and Sephiroth into the Nibelheim reactor, "Better take real good care of me, then!" (Unbeknownst to her, she's actually telling this to Cloud, the only person she's ever wanted to be her hero. Oh, the irony.) The fact that this is accompanied by a stomp of her foot makes it clear that it's not intended to be a serious request. It's more sarcastic than anything else. After all, Gondor has no king, Gondor needs -- er, Tifa doesn't need a man to keep her safe, she can damn well do it herself.

Keep others safe, too. For all that she's got a martial artist's blood in her veins, the heart it flows through is a maternal one despite the loss of a mother in her early childhood. Or perhaps in spite of it. She cares for Marlene as though she's her own little girl, even at the young of twenty, and when Cloud brings Denzel into their family unit prior to Advent Children, Tifa's arms are wide open, as ready to welcome as they are to protect. This is, in fact, one of the traits that is most central to Tifa's personality -- she is protective down to a fault, puts everyone's needs before her own, regardless of whether it's at her expense. Time and time again, we see her worry and fret over not just the consequences of things, but who they might affect, and when it's those who are near and dear to her, well. She'll pull out all the stops until they're out of danger.

Interestingly enough, that "near and dear" status with Tifa doesn't take too long of a time to get, either. Aerith is an excellent example of this. When they first meet, Tifa's reaction is one of insecurity -- but does that stop her from falling for Aerith's kind green eyes and good-with-people-right-from-the-get-go charm? No, no, and no. She instinctively knows she can trust her, asks her to take care of Marlene in her stead, and when they see her kidnapped on the chopper before the plate drop, it's Tifa who cries out her name. Tseng strikes Aerith across the face? Tifa's distress is audible yet again. And later on, she's the one feeling guilty about Aerith's kidnapping ("It's my fault... I was the one who got Aerith involved in this.") All from knowing her for maybe an hour or two.

Of course, Aerith herself is impossible not to like and become attached to (see Cloud agreeing to be her bodyguard right after meeting her) -- but it's not just Aerith with whom Tifa forms such a close bond so quickly. The events of Final Fantasy VII take place a little over a month, from December 0007 to the end of January the next year, and yet Tifa's relationship with her teammates is one of deep camaraderie. She has their backs, knows that they have hers, and is willing to fight beside them even to the death. You don't do that with just anyone, you know. At the very least there needs to be a deep-seated affection and trust there, and in Tifa's case it's safe to say that love is there, too.

But her bond with her friends didn't start off like this right away, of course -- took time and hard work to culivate, went through a lot of changes during that month and a half. Just like Tifa herself did. So the Tifa we see at the end of the game is, while being intrinsically the same person, somehow different too. She passed through weeks of pain and trouble, tears and sweat and blood, to find out that the heart she'd locked away to make sure it wouldn't get hurt had to break first before being truly whole. And yes, that's probably the sappiest way to put it, but it's true. Tifa's heart does break during the course of Final Fantasy VII, and breaks due to her own error at that.

And what an error. If she had only told Cloud the truth, right at the beginning, so much could have been avoided. If she'd only been a little less shy, a little less unwilling, a lot more brave, maybe things wouldn't have been so bad -- and she knows that. She knows she's messed up, messed up real bad, has to bear the guilt of not only standing by and allowing her best friend to stumble step by step until it was too late to stop him, but also the guilt of all that happens as a result. And the thing is, she pushes past it. It would've been easy for her to succumb to self-blame, to pack things and say uncle. But she doesn't give in to that damaging knowledge -- she falls down and gets right back up, to try and fix her messes as best as she can no matter what it costs her.

Thus, because she's made so many mistakes of her own, she's forgiving too, willing to let bygones be bygones if the someone is sincere in apology. Because she's known so much pain due to those mistakes, she doesn't judge others and takes the time to understand them before forming opinions. And because ultimately, despite those mistakes, she was given another chance at happiness, Tifa's the last personto deny someone theirs. From a little girl who was too convinced of her own shortcomings to do the right thing, she becomes an adult ready to shoulder the weight of her failings with a straight back, even if it breaks underneath. In every sense of the phrase, she grows up. And as Barret says to her in Mideel -- at the turning point for her character in the game, really --

"You're some kinda lady."

[personal profile] beatrush 2012-03-23 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities:
Nothing out of the ordinary for this gal -- if by ordinary one means being able to kick ass and take names like it's going out of style, which I do. Being a trained martial artist, Tifa can bring it to any party and bring it hard, fast, and limber. However, aside from that, she doesn't have any superhuman abilities or senses-enhancing stuff, so unless she's got materia on her, a stronger opponent can take her down. Speaking of which, she's adept with FFVII-canon magic as well, although she relies more on her fists during battle. She's a quick thinker on her feet as well, and doesn't crack under pressure.

Physicality aside, Tifa's other abilities include cooking, bartending, mediating between arguing parties, and being an excellent shoulder to lean on. She's also got an uncanny Chocobo-radar, useful for noticing awkward-turtling Clouds and bringing them out of hiding.

Writing sample:

The funny thing was, Tifa only realized she'd forgotten an umbrella when she almost reached the small shade of the store's front door when a wayward drop of rain hit her bare shoulder. She paused there, wondering if she ought to turn back, glanced up at the grey clouds that had been milling when she'd left home -- and got another drop in the eye for her efforts.

Ow. Absentmindedly, she rubbed it away with the heel of her palm and figured she'd just go on inside to pick up what she'd come for. A quick in and out and maybe she could beat the worst of the rain on her way back. It wouldn't take that long, right?

Left. By the time she was out again, arms laden with supplies, the rain was coming down in a steady sheet all the way down the street. The very out-in-the-open street, with no awnings to duck under along the way. O...kay. She could find a way out of this, she was resour-- aha! Shifting the weight onto one side as best as she could, Tifa maneuvered her black leather vest off one arm, shrugged it off the other, and draped it over the paper bags in her arms.

Except that left her completely open to the rain. Huh. With a sigh, she decided it didn't matter -- a little water wouldn't hurt her -- and ducking her head, started on her way back home.

Cloud Strife | Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (V1.1) | Reserved (2/3)

[personal profile] anonfantry 2012-03-24 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

“I'm just a normal grunt. I couldn't get into SOLDIER. That's all I am; a normal soldier.”

In his own words, Cloud is nobody special – of course, it's natural for most people to be their own biggest critic, but few tend to take the job as seriously as he does. Beneath his rather reserved, shy-bordering-on-standoffish exterior, Cloud is driven by an uncompromising determination. Once he sets his mind to something, he isn't one to give up easily (or, more often, at all), always ready to push himself past the limit for any worthy cause. All of his goals in life center on this single track: to prove himself, and to do so by becoming stronger than he is, now. He's grown up hinging the entirety of his self-worth on this seemingly unattainable strength, and because of this, he takes his personal failings to heart more deeply than may be strictly healthy. No matter how big or small the perceived inadequacy, he's prone to beating himself up endlessly over each and every failure (not being able to stop Tifa from falling on Mt. Nibel, never making SOLDIER, his inability to stand out under Shinra's employ at all), and, in applicable cases, he's perfectly capable of carrying the guilt with him for years. This type of thinking has resulted in predictably low self-esteem; for example, when thanked, even in separate instances, for having helped comrades come to some important realizations of their own, Cloud appears genuinely perplexed by the thought of having inadvertently done well. He's willing to forgive a great many things of others (especially his idols), but very few of himself. As intensely negative as the tangled motivations that hold him up can be, though, Cloud isn't a total downer.

For all of the time and effort he spends doubting himself, all of the shame and anger he internalizes over his weaknesses, he's still more than resilient enough to bounce back – no matter how many times he's knocked down, Cloud is always ready to get back up and try again. He never stops looking for the next chance to be somebody, though it isn't all selfishness, either. Below that desperation, there is a genuine desire to be helpful, useful, to protect the people who are important to him. Once a person's place is cemented in his heart, whether by conventional means or via the not-so-occasional case of hero worship, he'd do anything for them – though, actually, he's liable to go to extreme lengths for just about anybody, given the right circumstance. Even put in charge of guarding complete strangers' lives, he is willing without a second thought to throw himself into fights where the enemies vastly outclass (not to mention outnumber) him, for their sake. He has a bad habit of never once pausing to assess the risk to himself in these types of situations, however, and very often ends up getting into trouble well over his head because of it.

Then again, perhaps it's to be expected, with or without his lacking sense of self-preservation, when the list of things that are so totally out of his league drags on so long. Even some of the simplest matters can send him ducking back under the cover of his guarded facade. Given the turbulent nature of his childhood (after being blamed for Tifa's fall, he was found to be fighting with the other children all of the time – that is, when he wasn't avoiding them entirely), Cloud has fairly little experience in healthy, ordinary social interaction to fall back on. As a child, he managed to rationalize away his stubborn inability to connect with his peers by building himself up in some backwards fashion from within the safety of an open disdain for them.

In the years since, he's become a considerably less volatile person, but the propensity for such harsh judgement remains, along with a buried streak of that fearsome temper. These days, his anger is mostly directed inward, lashing out reserved more for dire situations, while the rest of the time, Cloud's much more likely to take the opposite route. When pressed on sensitive subjects, he reverts back to that time-tested technique of walling himself off, a shift that's always very overt in his body language: he'll most likely turn away, go defensively silent, all but announce aloud that whoever has pressed one of his buttons is about to get the cold shoulder for some indeterminate amount of time. Even with positive emotions, he tends to take the easy out, though (telling Zack how much he admires him in what basically amounts to a text message, for instance, as well as later inviting him to visit at his home in the same fashion – even though he has more than ample opportunity to simply ask something so straightforward in person).

In a lot of ways, though, he's still just the average awkward teenager, beneath all of his insecurities and mildly obsessive aspirations. He won't hesitate (or not for too very long, anyway) to speak when spoken to, tending toward concise (if not necessarily decisive) replies, and doesn't even have much problem joking around with people who show good humor toward him, first. Without obvious cues to lead him, though, his wallflower nature becomes more noticeable; Cloud is a reactive personality, rarely apt to take the initiative unless it's in the line of duty. He's easy to confuse, conflicted as he is in his own wants, quick to find himself tongue-tied, at best, and totally in the wrong, at worst. Which is not to say Cloud's an absolute failure at empathy – it's simply deciphering these hidden messages in others' emotional states that he's not so good at. Perhaps because he has such a hard time with simple expressions, himself. As great as his desire for strength and acclaim and even just friendship may be, articulating these feelings is not something he'll ever grow to excel at.

As eager as he is to change himself, however, maybe it's not a completely lost cause.

“Even a lowly soldier like me can do something. If I can't even save one life, I don't belong in SOLDIER. I'm going to fight!”

Cloud Strife | Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (V1.1) | Reserved (3/3)

[personal profile] anonfantry 2012-03-24 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities:
Cloud has a couple of years of basic military training, knows how to fire and maintain an automatic rifle (though he isn't very proficient with it, on the former), can cast "magic" with the use of equipped materia (of which he presently has none, given that's equipment a little above his pay-grade), and has the necessary knowledge of survival skills one would expect of both an infantryman and a kid who grew up fending for himself way out in the boonies. But for the most part, he is limited to the abilities of an ordinary human being. Physically, he's quite weak, and mentally can be even more so (being both a very driven individual – and far more by his emotions than he tends to want to let on – and one prone to making rash decisions based on this drive).

However (through the magic of imminent protagonist status) there are two exceptions to the rule:

1) Under the absolute most extreme duress, Cloud is capable of tapping into an exceptional well of willpower, which transfers into seemingly inhuman strength (i.e. throwing Sephiroth across a room by the end of his own sword while still being impaled upon it, or lifting the Buster Sword with ease)

2) He has an apparently natural skill wielding swords, unlike with his standard issue weaponry, and is capable of striking far more devastating blows this way (this skill, however, also appears to be something of a desperation move – after the first incident in which he successfully wields a sword instead of his gun, he claims to have blacked out and have no memory of how he managed to take the opponents out with one swing)

Writing sample:

(From this thread.)

It's spring, already, but there's a chill lingering in the air yet, icy fingers in the breeze reminding recently thawed ground of a winter just passed and amplifying the cold grip anxiety has settled over his heart. He hadn't dressed warmly enough, back then, either -- months that felt years gone, now. The last time he was here, standing in the crisscrossed shadows of the water tower's splintering wooden supports, waiting beneath the picture perfect, starry night sky.

There's no moon by which he might tell the hour, this time, and he's never owned a watch; so he waits, counting out the minutes each instant he hesitates and convinces himself it's safer to wait just a little longer. The lights in the houses around his hiding place were all extinguished long ago, lit out one by one as snuffed candles, families settling in for the evening, for the night. He might have run from where he stands, still, back shortly to the safety and warmth of his own home, where his mother sleeps, unaware of his plans to abscond far earlier than he's promised.

There's a different promise he intends to keep, though, as he ducks out from underneath the water tower at last to steal into the open, running quietly as he can to that painfully familiar spot-- There's no light in the window he peers up into, either, and some vital chord in him pulled taut with tension hums another foreboding note to his terrified mind.

(Because at all of fourteen and with precious little else to his name, the prospect of fatally wounded pride is surely something to be terrified of.)

She's not there that ugly little voice whispers. Or maybe it's She's changed her mind. Which is worse? He doesn't want to decide. In one final flash of bravery, he tosses the pebble practically crushed into his palm up to hit one dark windowpane. Though the rock he'd carefully selected in his time spent waiting is far too small even to crack the glass, he still has to grit his teeth at that little clatter of sound. It's more noise than he's made since taking up his hiding spot beneath the tower. Since some inconsequential, noncommittal answer he'd mumbled over the last homemade dinner he'll ever have in the only home he's ever known. Ages and ages ago.

A part of him (probably the same part that keeps reassuring him she's off somewhere laughing with her friends, right now, or telling on him because she's still angry that he let her fall) is certain that he's just made up this whole thing. That it must've been a dream he had, that if she even shows up at her bedroom window, it'll only be to look down on him like he's lost his mind. But back when he'd so flatly suggested that she run away, too, he still remembers--

He thinks he remembers--

Counting down the seconds between breaths, Cloud stops thinking and waits. He can afford to, for just a little longer.

Character name: Reno
Character fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Version: V1
Canon point: Taken from during the Turk's vacation to Wutai in FFVII, just prior to Elena being kidnapped. -Considering that Wutai is an optional town/quest in game the assumption is made that it is done at the earliest possible time which is right after completing Rocket Town.

Importing development from old game? Nope
Background:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reno_(Final_Fantasy_VII)#Reno
http://valiantknife.org/reno/
-One of my favorite sites, and a pretty good analysis of Reno's personality.

Personality:
Reno's attitude in general is quite laid back and rather sure of himself, almost cocky, and in most interactions with the other characters he doesn't get terribly over emotional about anything unless it's truly important. In the middle of an emergency, he will keep his head and focus on what needs to be done, and do his best to do it, at the risk of injury to himself despite his motto "A pro doesn't sacrifice himself for the job." (But, you know, that's just because he actually cares.) He has a sarcastic wit and evil sense of humor that can be quite morbid, often joking with his co-workers or mocking his enemies in the middle of battle.

Even with his hidden willingness to risk injury and death, he does have a strong survival instinct and will try to get out of a situation or complete his mission without casualties. Here, he differs with one of the Turk's motto: to complete the mission any way possible- or rather he interprets this to mean completing the mission even if he has to retreat in order to fight another day. Preferably coming back with reinforcements.

Internally, he can be far less sure of himself and what he is doing than he seems when the job takes things to the far extreme. At times, he can even be a touch mercurial or temperamental with his subordinates if they display weakness, most likely because he may not be entirely sure himself. Such times are rare, and for the most part, he relies on his experiences. Despite his liking people to think the opposite, he is far from infallible and can be defeated- those defeats weigh on him at times and are a major source of self doubt.

Causing him to lose his temper is difficult, but not impossible. Like everyone, he has his own buttons to be pushed, though few and far between. His relationship with his employers and his co-workers is one such button, as is his own abilities. Keep pushing his buttons, attacking him, and one can see how he loses patience and return in like with a vengeance, even merciless.

Sometimes, he will act almost disdainful and a touch sarcastic, and often as if he has better things to do than talk with someone else. One reason for this is efficiency; if he is focused on something else he may indeed have something better to do and in that case can act this way to people he knows. Another is because interacting with the other person may be more important than he wants to let on. A third reason is interaction with a person who is neither friend, enemy, companion or someone he just dislikes. As an example, he will get like this when AVALANCHE is interfering with his work, or is having to deal with someone on the Shin-Ra board whom he does not entirely like or trust.

Pleasure and business are two separate things to him, though he may frequently find that either will clash with the other. Duty may call him on his off hours, and find him relaxing and unwilling to go back to work until he is officially on the clock again. Likewise, his laid back attitude about work quickly changes when he does go on the clock, throwing himself into his work- he does enjoy his job, particularly the challenges. He may even be a touch sadistic as he has no initial problem killing on orders or destroying entire buildings, though after all is said and done he still has to live with it.

To those who are not friend, co-worker or employer, but are merely companions, he can be civil, even almost friendly with a touch of his usual sarcastic, nonchalant mood, and if he is particularly bored may even tease or prank them. These are people he does not know, nor quite trust, but recognize them as at least not an enemy (for now). The civility and friendliness will increase as he gets to know them and perhaps even trust him, though the true friend side of him is less shown as trusting strangers does not come easily for him, and is necessary for what he is. When trust is earned, so too comes loyalty.

Whatever else can be said about Reno and his attitude is that, at his heart, he is extremely loyal to those he trusts and considers a friend. As a turk, he would be useless without loyalty as he is entrusted with secrets on a routine basis, and he would be dead many times over without the loyalty and trust seen between the Turks. To earn such from him without being another Turk, is a challenge- a real betrayal would permanently end it.

Abilities:

  • Reno is a normal (albeit highly trained) human from his world (Gaia), which may differ somewhat from real life standards, because physically able people seem to be able to jump 30 feet without any help and land without injury...

  • Reno is quick in motion- it is mentioned in canon that he is the fastest of the Turks.

  • He is adept at piloting helicopters, and by implication airplanes.

  • Reno is highly trained in martial arts, use of an Electro-Mag Rod, and magical ability.

Writing sample:

Blinking, the turk peered through the binoculars at the scene below him from his nest amongst the trees of the jungle. It was a clever place, he thought. The terrorists were walking back and forth, unloading a truck of goods newly hijacked, but that wasn't what held Reno's attention.

It was the small form tied up in the back of the truck that did. Reno blamed himself for the girl's kidnapping- it had been a stupid mistake someone like him shouldn't have made, especially not when it concerned a rookie. Well, that was why he was here.

He picked up his radio, setting the binoculars aside for the moment. "Reno, here. I've got them in my sights, chief."

There was a brief burst of static. "Good work. Can you tell how many?"

"Just a few dozen. I shouldn't have much trouble gettin' rid of them." Reno wasn't exaggerating. In fact, he kind of prided himself on disposing of a small army by himself last week. Sure, he had been exhausted and ready for a hospital room when it was over, but that's what you get for messing with him. A slight smirk escaped his lips at the thought, and grew wider as he imagined just how he'd take care of the guy that had backhanded Elena when they caught her. She was safe, for now, but he didn't trust these goons to keep their mitts off of her for too much longer.

I'm not sure if he's v1 or v1.1 since he's so far pre-canon

Canon point: Precanon
Importing development from old game? No
Background: (his wiki page is JUST his picture...)

Half-elven Prince Falkieri Artfel Phelan was born to the King (human) and Queen (elven) of Lyonya. Because he is half-elven, he can decide whether to look more human or more elven when he comes of age. From birth, though, he looked more like his human father. This wasn't a problem for their people, who are human and elven and the elven taig-sense is needed for their ruler, as Falkieri was betrothed to a full-blooded elf. So even if he couldn't use his taig-sense, his wife and children would be able to. (The taig-sense lets elves sense each other, natural things, and the Taig, the tree of life.)

He and his mother were out riding one day. She was killed and it was thought that Falkieri perished with her. His father was killed after and his human sister was given to a regent lord. Lyonya was thrown into trouble because of this and the Elves and Humans started to distrust each other.

Falkieri was taken far away by priests of Liart and given to Baron Sekkady. Liart, who reigns over torture, and the Webmistress, who ever spins lies, were determined to see Lyonya fall into their hands and all of its people. Baron Sekkandy told Falkieri that his name was Kieri Artfiel Phelan and called him Artfiel.

Baron Sekkady was a cruel master and Kieri doesn't go into great detail about those years he was enslaved to him. He tells us: "What did he do? What did he not do, that an evil and cruel man could think of! Imagine your small sons, my lords, in the hands of such a man - hungry, tired, beaten daily, and worse than beaten." It's stated at another point in the book that Baron Sekkady sexually abused Kieri and rented him out to guests. Kieri used to be put on display for guests and the day came when one recognized the lost prince. Baron Sekkady was a wizard and he put silence on that visitor. He was able to make them silent and motionless and he dragged that unfortunate guest off to the dungeons to be tormented.

But that guest had power of his own and made Kieri leave. Kieri had tried to escape before this time and had been so badly punished for it that he lost hope of ever escaping and simply started hoping for death. Still, somehow this unnamed visitor took away Kieri's fears and sent him off to escape. He slipped out the window and ran until he came to the coast. He stowed away on a ship and made his way inland back to Lyonya, not out of memory but simply running away and working his way further inland over the course of half a year.

His dreams will happen while he's on the road and working his way inland.
