WHAT TO KNOW |
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to. Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful. In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character. The application page from the former site can be found here. |

MISC. RULES |
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other. Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request. There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying. If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite. If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor. Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans. |

APPLICATION IN DETAIL |
Your name: Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference. Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted. Other characters played at Passing: Character name: Character fandom: Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options. Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from. Importing development from old game? If yes, where from? Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously. In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves. Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different. Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon. Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice. Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section. Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character. Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed. Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or ![]() Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread. These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly. |

Roy Mustang | Fullmetal Alchemist | Reserved
Your journal: silverjade
Contact: silverjade @ plurk ; carminejackal @ aim
Other characters played at Passing: Rufus ShinRa [V1]
Character name: Roy Mustang
Character fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood/Manga
Version: V1
Canon point:Chapter 1/Episode 1
Importing development from old game? N/A
Background: Rise of a Mustang within the Military
Changes from canon, if AU: N/A
Personality:
Mustang is a complex puzzle of a man. Run into him and have a chat with him and even if you are the most keen of observers you will still likely not know anything behind what makes the man actually tick inside. If anything what you think you know about him will in all likelihood be utterly wrong. The man is a consummate actor, and depending on just who's currently around him, Roy will tailor just what he appears to be to suit whatever goals or whims he holds at the time concerning those people. Which is not to say he's manipulative because he isn't (at least not toward his comrades and friends anyway).
Roy has just learned how to keep people guessing about him so they have no real chances to get too close to him or rather closer than he desires them to get. The act also is rather good for hiding what he's up to, well, what he's /really/ up to anyway, not the sham that he lets people catch onto. Those few who have managed to work themselves into Roy's life end up becoming surprisingly loyal to the man without Roy even asking for the loyalty to be given. In return, Roy gives them just as much loyalty, showing a dogged determination to keep them safe, especially after he loses one of them.
Most of the world sees Mustang as a man too young for his rank, who shirks his work for as long as he can manage to get away with it, foisting it off on his subordinates when possible. His notes hold the names of all kinds of women and his conversations on the phone (during work hours no less) also have given him the reputation of being a womanizer of worst kind. He doesn't help this image any when he decides to flirt or romance an unfortunate co-worker's lady interest away either.
He seems at times cold, self-centered, and arrogant, only doing actual work when it holds some benefit for himself. This image is the greatest act of his, causing many to underestimate him, because they don't realize the man is often working even when it appears as if he's goofing off. In fact, many of the women Roy tends to visit and 'date' actually provide him with information he uses to further his plans and goals.
Those said goals are to propel himself upward through the ranks, until he manages to displace King Bradley as the leader of the country and once attaining such a lofty position, using it to turn the country into a better place, where he can actually protect its people instead of being forced to harm them. These goals expand to deal with the Homunculi and also to find the actual culprit behind Maes Hughes murder as time progresses.
His determination, including that sheer conviction in continuing to move forward toward his goals and his ability as a leader have earned him the respect of not only his allies and friends but also that of his enemies. What his enemies throw at him, he takes it in stride and learns what he can from it before continuing to forge on ahead. He may get held back briefly by unexpected setbacks, but he will overcome these events and in the end he will come out of them with some kind of benefit.
Unfortunately for the man, his strength of character is also his worst weakness. The man actually cares for those under his command, which unfortunately means he can be manipulated by threatening those he holds dear to him. The man will worry himself sick if he thinks he's put someone he cares for under the line of fire and will try to correct the situation if at all possible.
However he does know how to hide this worry and stress when necessary, showing weakness outright is pretty much suicide in his position, thus to keep his current place and also ascend higher with his goals he must keep up a serious, if somewhat coldly strict demeanor to those around him that aren't part of his inner circle. Speaking of appearances, Roy is rather a polite person conversation wise. He tends to treat almost anyone he comes across with respect due to them no matter who they are, what they are or what their gender or age is. Admittedly he seems to tease Ed a little, but then the boy is ridiculously easy to rile up even without meaning to.
Abilities:
Firearms; During his time as a cadet in the military academy, he's been trained in how to use both handguns and rifles.
Leadership; Roy has an almost uncanny ability to lead people and get them to follow him, he's good at manipulating events to suit his purposes and good at knowing what to do in a given situation usually. He has at times even used chess terminology for himself and those under him, styling himself as the king of the board currently in play. Those who have given the man their loyalty tend to remain loyal to him no matter the distance or situation they're placed within afterward and when he calls for their aid, they will give it.
Alchemy;
Roy's specialty ~ Flame Alchemy
Using gloves made of "pyrotex/ignition cloth" and embroidered with unique flame alchemy Transmutation Circles, these gloves create a spark when Roy rubs his fingers together and allow him to manipulate the concentration of oxygen in the air surrounding his target, raising its density to a level at which it becomes a volatile and flammable oxidizer, and creating narrow pathways of oxygen through which he can direct the ensuing flame that blossoms from the spark. The 'snap' sound is caused by the instantaneous speed at which the highly concentrated gases and sparks react together and pop (not his fingers actually 'snapping', to common belief.)
It can't be used on rainy days because the humidity makes it impossible for his gloves to produce sparks, though it becomes clear in chapter 38 that water itself does not make him nearly as "useless" as other's assume. Using the transmutation circles on his gloves, he is able to separate hydrogen atoms from the oxygen atoms in water molecules, isolating them into a highly combustible fuel and powerfully volatile oxidizer, respectively. Though this method can only be used when a large quantity of water is present in a relatively closed-off space (and not in the rain where the air is open and separating hydrogen and oxygen for the purpose of combustion would pose far too much danger to anyone in the vicinity), with an outside source of ignition such as a cigarette lighter or a match, Roy can produce extremely powerful, localized explosions.
It has also been revealed that Roy is able to delegate each hand to a different flame effect, possibly due to a difference in hand dexterity. The right hand appears to allow for large explosive attacks, while the left allows for smaller, but strong and very accurate pinpoint flame attacks, demonstrated when he used his left hand to evaporate the liquid in Envy's eyes causing excruciating pain, and the right to engulf Envy in a large explosion.
Writing sample:
Roy stood on the promontory on the outskirts of one of the districts in Ishval, looking out over the town below. His mind silently compared the scene he saw before him to the one in his memory from nine years ago, and it was satisfying to note just how far they'd come in repairing things here in the last couple years. He turned away from the view to head down toward the town, his mind mulling over things as he walked.
With how good it felt to actually be able to repair, and rebuild what he'd had such a hand in destroying, he thought that perhaps even if he hadn't regained his sight via Marcoh's ultimatum, that he might just possibly have sought to do what he was doing here regardless. It would admittedly be harder to do without being able to see what was happening, but he had people he trusted still working under him. They would have served well as his eyes if he'd asked it of them, he believed.
Roy had just managed to reach the edge of the town proper when the first bout of dizziness hit unexpectedly. It caused him to pause, trying to judge just how long he'd been out moving around in the town today. Had he spent too long working outside in the heat? In this far out east, heat exhaustion was an actual threat he knew. He'd warned a few of the soldiers under his command about it when they'd first begun their work here. Admittedly the heat wasn't as bad here as it was in the great desert, but it was nothing to take to treat lightly regardless.
It was entirely possible, he thought, that the heat from the sun added with that of his full uniform, coat, and the day's activity had conspired against him. It'd be ironic if he ended up suffering from what he'd warned his men to watch out for. As the dizziness faded, Roy made his way out of the direct sun toward a more shaded area, reflecting as he did that he really should have forgone the coat, but it kept the majority of the sand from coating his uniform, and thus kept him from looking like he'd been rolling in it whenever he went in for a meeting indoors. His only real concession to the weather here had been switching from a black coat to a white one, if only so it didn't soak up the heat as badly.
It was shortly after he reached the shaded area that he'd aimed for, that another fit of dizziness hit him, and he briefly leaned against the house to steady himself. He lifted a hand to wipe it across his forehead, brushing damp hair free from his skin as he did so. Heat exhaustion was feeling more likely as the time passed. If that was the case, then he needed to get inside out of the heat and get something cool to drink to combat it. Their makeshift headquarters was the coolest that he knew of, and thus possibly the best place for that. Roy left the shade behind and headed toward the building, trying to reach it as quickly as possible. The sooner he got inside, the better. He didn't need or want to invite possible trouble by possibly ending up with heat stroke and passing out in the street in public view.
As he continued, he felt more and more fatigued. His focus was also wavering and his thoughts began to slide just a little toward panicky. Just how had things gotten so bad? He hadn't thought he'd been out long enough for the heat to affect him like this. It could have possibly been a combination of heat and dehydration. Perhaps he should have carried a canteen with him. Yet, he'd done stints like today during the war here, and he'd been using his flame alchemy which had only added to the heat.
Roy's thoughts were abruptly interrupted as his legs suddenly buckled beneath him, sending him hard onto his knees. He reached out to catch himself from falling face first into the ground. Wincing at the impact, he shook off the pain and attempted to push himself up into a crouch. Once he succeeded, he tried to straighten up from the crouch into a standing position but lost his balance as vertigo assaulted him, driving him back onto his knees again. He looked up trying to see just how far he had left until he reached his goal, but his vision grew dark. Panic stole in again, digging out a rather irrational fear he sometimes worried about. Despite the fact the stone had returned his sight to him, was it possible that it was only temporary? He lost conscious as that last thought passed through his mind, his body falling forward to hit the ground.
....
When he woke abruptly, he was forced to calm his racing heart and gather his thoughts together. Opening his eyes to darkness didn't help him quell the last irrational fear he'd been thinking of when he'd passed out. However, as he turned his head slightly and caught the hint of red and yellow around him, he was finally able to put the fear to rest. But what was that red and yellow he was seeing? Just where in the hell was he now? Unless he was deep underground, it was too cool to still be Ishval. Just how long had he been unconscious? Who had moved him and where? And perhaps, more importantly, why?
