WHAT TO KNOW |
Applications are ALWAYS OPEN, and will be processed as they are received. They must be posted in the comments, NOT linked to. Before applying, read the rules & setting page and this post in their entirety. Use the potential applications page or the FAQ if you have any questions about the process. There is also a sample app and an explanation of how we process apps if those interest you. The wanted characters list may also be helpful. In general, however, we would rather have a shorter, better written application than a longer one, every time. That said, length is one of the least important factors in our applications. We look primarily at the voice samples, then the personality section and writing sample. The voice samples are by far the most important section, and we prefer that these be thread links, because they give us a sense of how you play the character rather than simply how you write an application for the character. The application page from the former site can be found here. |

MISC. RULES |
We do allow challenge apps, but we wait the duration of the reserve for the other app to come in before processing them against each other. Applications or parts of applications (such as the initial comment containing contact information) will be screened on request. There is a one week grace period for dropped characters during which applications for them will be held pending. The former player can choose to pick up those characters at any time during that week without re-applying. If you are asked for a revision, you have one week to submit them before your app will be automatically declined. You must resubmit your app in its entirety if that happens. Always feel free to ask us to clarify what we're looking for on revisions; we won't bite. If you are rejected, we encourage you to re-apply. We like seeing players that have taken our critique and worked on improving their portrayal. The exception is a character rejected on the grounds that they would be difficult to impossible for others to play with. Playability is an important factor. Our plagiarism policy is as follows: the first offense will be met without consequence. The second offense results in a one month ban from apping. Subsequent further offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis but most likely incur longer bans, up to and including indefinite bans. |

APPLICATION IN DETAIL |
Your name: Your journal: A sock is fine, or a commonly used character journal if you don't have a personal one. Just please be consistent with your identity for ease of reference. Contact: AIM/plurk/email/etc., whatever you prefer to be contacted. Other characters played at Passing: Character name: Character fandom: Version: V1, V1.# or V2+ should be the only options. Canon point: What point of their timeline you're taking them from. Importing development from old game? If yes, where from? Background: Link to the Wiki entry on it, or if the series has its own wiki, the character's page. A comprehensive fan site is an acceptable substitute. If you cannot find one of these that works well enough for us to get a good grasp of your character from a third party, please write out the standard 'history' section for this on your own. Please include this even if applying for an AU version of the character. OCs need the history section written out as well, obviously. In general, though, this should be a link whenever possible and not a written history. We use it to compare an unbiased third party account against your represented version of the character. If you include a written history, we will ignore it completely and look up whatever is available for that character on Wikipedia ourselves. Changes from canon, if AU: What it says. Detail here how the AU world is different from canon, or what events have happened in their previous game that have lead them to be different. Personality: The meat of the application, and self-explanatory. We want to see that you understand what makes them tick. If AU, try to include explanation for where and why the character has changed from canon. Abilities: What are they particularly good at, or if they do have superhuman powers, what are they? A bullet point list will suffice. Writing sample: At least 200 words of your own writing in third person prose, preferably about the character you're applying for. Samples about others are allowed, in any setting. This is to gauge your writing style and technique, not your grasp of character. That's the next section. Voice sample: You may either write 200 words of your character speaking to himself, or you may link to threads, or you may request to thread with a mod character. Regular voice sample: If choosing option one, the standard first person sample rules apply. The word count applies only to spoken words, not action in brackets, and since 200 words is a lot for some quiet characters, more than one different samples are allowed. Linking to threads: If you are linking to threads, make sure they are lengthy ones that demonstrate your understanding of the character. We don't need a million of them, but remember that this is as a substitute for a sample, and we will evaluate it the same way. Threads that took place in other games, museboxes, or ![]() Threading with a mod character: You may also request to thread with a mod character - please do so in the body of your application when you submit it, rather than contacting a mod privately. The first available mod will respond back as soon as possible and discuss with you who your character would be best suited to play off of of their characters, and then you will agree on a time to sit down and crack out a thread. These will be 'quick log' style in brackets and not prose to make them go faster and keep the focus on dialog. These do not have to be masterpieces of wonder, but your application will not be judged until you have finished the thread (at least 20 comments on your part), so think carefully before choosing this option. The mods will make every effort to respond to your tags quickly. |

Changes from canon, if AU: Raven always wanted to be the one that people overlooked. She wanted to be the one that they never looked twice at. She always ended being the freak, though. Her mother was usually too drunk to care about anything and her father was usually drunk enough by the time he got home that the first thing he did when he saw his daughter was to take a swipe at her with the backside of his hand. Raven learned quickly that she needed to be somewhere else when he came home and she often found herself wishing that she could be someone else.
It was during one of those desperate times, curled up in the back of her closet that she wished so hard that she was someone else that she actually became someone else. Someone old enough to stand up to her father. Someone pretty enough that people wouldn't stare at her when she walked down the street. Just someone else.
When she confronted her father, it took a few tries for him to understand that the woman standing in front of him was actually his daughter. Raven thought that she had finally found a way to be someone else. Instead, he smacked her hard across the jaw for what she had done. The blow surprised her and, as she fell back, her natural form came back to the fore.
She was seven.
After that, she started running away. She would leave her house and pose as someone else. Sometimes she'd be a little girl, going to school for the first time and sometimes she'd be an older woman, out looking for a job. The more she experienced, the more she learned about the way the world worked. She'd been hoping to find some kind of peace and she did...for normal people. Still, she reasoned, it wasn't their fault. She was something new. It was only her father who used her strangeness as an excuse to hit her. But despite that, she couldn't help going back to him time and time again. Sometimes it was because she needed something to eat. She could always find something to eat at home, even if he would make her work for it, even if she would have to beg him, tears streaming down her face, for just a single bowl of whatever he and her mother had decided to eat. But there were times when she had it good, too. There were times when she'd worked herself into a life for a few months and things were okay and yet she still went back.
Those were the days when she needed someone to see her for what she really was. She understood the necessity of the mask, understood that she couldn't be different if she wanted to make it in the world outside, but sometimes she still just wanted to be Raven.
It wasn't until she was ten that the cycle of leaving and returning stopped for good. It was then that she met Charles. Pretending at first to be his mother, she was surprised when he could see right through the deception and even more surprised to learn how. He could read her mind. He was different...just like her. She stayed with him for a few days and that was when she found out that Charles' life was so much worse than her own. She'd only had an alcoholic mother and an abusive father. Charles had a step-father who used him. He was experimented on and it both sickened and terrified Raven. No one should have to go through that. At first, she wasn't able to do anything. She didn't know what she could do. But Charles had worked her into his life, he'd made the people around him believe that she was a part of her family and, therefore, she slowly started learning to protect Charles as best she could. She would hide Charles and then claim she didn't know where he was. She would help them look and make sure that they didn't go to the place where he was.
She had become Charles' sister through both his own will and her own desire, but she wasn't his only sibling. He had a brother, Cain, and Raven tried to protect him, too, but when it came down to it and she had to protect one brother over the other, she always protected Charles. He was the one who relied on her and she had to do her best to live up to that faith. It was also the reason why she never went home. Charles needed her just like she needed him. She didn't need her father or her mother again. They'd never wanted her and she'd found something better than people who just knew what she was. She'd found someone who accepted who she was.
After she'd been there a year or two, Cain ran away. It broke her heart and made her even more protective of Charles. She'd go through hell and the rage of his step-father in order to get him through safely. As much as she wanted to, though, she was still years younger than Kurt and, sometimes, he took Charles away. When he came back, Charles was always a little more broken. Raven would cradle him in his arms and tell him that everything would be all right. It was a lie and he'd know it was, but maybe he would see that she was trying her best for them both.
Then, abruptly, she was able to keep her promise. When his mother and step-father died, the tests were over with. She let things stand as they were for a month or two, but soon she decided that they needed something different. It would always be the two of them, but Charles needed to get back in the world. School was a challenge she wasn't sure how they were going to face. Charles didn't do well in groups and that's all school was. As his 'mother', she was often called in after school while the administrators talked to her about Charles' behavior and about his outbursts and she would come back and remind them of how brilliant he was and that he would never change and be more like how they thought a normal student should be unless he was allowed to be around other children.
Her arguments won and Charles flourished under the learning, if not the socialization. Honors and awards were heaped on him and he treated them like they were nothing. Sometimes Raven wondered if this is what the rest of her life would be like. She loved Charles, she would do anything for him, but she never really had a life of her own. She had the occasional date, sure, but more often than not, those relationships ended when they met Charles. They wanted her to be normal, they wanted her family to be some picture-perfect family and she refused to be that. And so it ended. Not Charles' fault, really, and she didn't blame him for it at all, but it still left her feeling isolated and, unlike Charles, she didn't like that isolation.
The first time she met Moira MacTaggert, Raven already disliked her. She had caught Charles unawares and was trying to get him to talk about mutations and his work like they were things to be found in the real world. They were, of course, but Raven was terrified at first that they'd been caught out. It wasn't until after she had intercepted the conversation in progress and made Moira say to her what she had said to Charles that she understood. There were other people like her and like Charles out there. The idea of them being bad or good didn't hit her at first and she agreed after a moment's conferral with Charles to help in any way that she and Charles could. Things spiraled from normal to out of control in a matter of days. First the CIA found out about the existence of mutants and then she and Charles were whisked off to a Coast Guard vessel, travelling the darkness in search of others like them. It was only when they found the mutants, the others like them, that it hit her. Not all of them were kind and gentle like Charles. There were some as bad if not worse than Charles' step-father. Now they didn't just have a mission to find others like them, they had a duty to protect the people who couldn't protect themselves. Just like she had protected - and still did protect - Charles.
Personality: Raven is driven by the need to protect. First, she tries to protect herself, then she tries to protect Charles, and finally, she is beginning to learn that she has to protect the normal humans from the mutants, from the people who have abilities like she and Charles have, but who use them in the most cruel ways. She tries not to see this need to protect, especially of Charles, as a burden. Especially Charles, since he can read into her mind and since he knows every last thing about her. Instead, she views it as a way to help other people, like Charles had first helped her. She'd had no one to turn to until she met Charles and he changed everything for her.
She is, by necessity, a bit of a loner. When she's without Charles, she definitely enjoys a little fun, but much of her time is spent looking after her brother and he has become her brother over the years. When she is by herself, she tries to be friendly and outgoing. She wants to see the best in people. When she's finally forced to see the truth, like she did when she learned about Shaw, she is crushed.
Raven only really feels comfortable around Charles, but that's more because she yearns to have people who love her for what she is rather than who she appears to be. At the same time, she rarely ever changes from her blonde form unless there's a reason to. When there is, she will change without a moment's hesitation. She knows that she isn't who she projects to the world. She's more than that, but she refuses to let others know what she is because of the reaction of her father when she was a child. He hated her for what she was and so she believes that others will hate her. She wonders whether she'll feel more comfortable when she's around her own kind.
Abilities: Raven has the ability to change her outer appearance. This includes the ability to mimic other mutants physical abilities (see: Logan's claws), but these appendages remain flesh.
Writing sample: Cain was gone.
Raven noticed almost immediately after getting out of bed. It was her usual pattern to check on both of the boys and then go find out where Kurt was. If he was up and active, she would sometimes wake up either Cain or - usually - Charles and get them out. She'd tell them she wanted to go for a walk or wanted to go to town or some other nice lie that she knew they could probably see through. Anything that would get them out of the line of fire.
The first person she'd checked on that morning was Charles. Charles always looked so small and vulnerable when he was sleeping. It was like he didn't have a care in the world and Raven could almost forget what happened to him when he was awake. Almost. Then she shut his door and went down the hall to Cain's room. She opened it without knocking, in case he was asleep, and was mildly surprised to find him already awake and not in her room. She didn't start worrying for the first ten minutes. Twenty minutes after that, she woke up Charles to help in the search and he was able to tell her what she had been afraid of. Cain wasn't there anymore.
A lump stuck in her throat and it felt like her heart was being squished between two tight hands. She'd wanted to protect them, to protect them both, but had only managed to protect Charles.
