How exactly do we handle the... "awake" period - when characters aren't here and dreaming? For the cases of some canons, a lot can happen in the course of a single day, after all. Or is the awake period handwaved and assumed that nothing happened of importance...?

It's this bit about the entire premise that really confuses me, but I'm really interested otherwise.
