"I remember that morning. I'd been up all night. I had heartburn from the too-spicy takeaway I'd ordered to keep me going, my eyes were tired and so were my hands. But when you took your first steps, Cait, said your first words, it all fell away. I could have run up and down all of the early-morning fogged streets of all of the levels of my suddenly beautiful city, laughing like a mad man, like a free man-- like a new father. That's what I was, in a way. Even though you grew so fast, learned so much, became a friend and an intellectual foil when I needed one, you were always my child. My first child. There are newer models Cait, complete with all of the fixes and improvements I could dream up (and that you could critique, when I let you get your paws on the plans), but they won't ever replace you. How could they? I made you, but you made yourself the individual you were. I'll love them all, those bright-eyed kittens in their smart black-and-white suits, and there will always be that first moment-- but there is only one very first moment, and that one belongs to you."
